17" gets deep platinum

Hit the same beach as yesterday where I'd found the 14k ring. The platinum rang in at a solid 12-12 out of the hole but started out as just a "thunk ,thunk " when I first heard it . Was at least 12" deep .

Not to sound too lame, but what exactly do you mean by "thunk, thunk"? When I'm detecting on the beach I'm usually using an open screen and if I hear something it'll usually correspond to some type of fe-co numbers, if it's in the iron range I just pass it up. On this nice platinum did you just get something like a blank spot in the threshold? I'm asking mainly because I'm unsure how I should be proceeding with the deeper items. Sometimes I'll get that whisper type of signal with no numbers but I don't stop and dig. It seems like on my socal beaches the 17" coil gives a pretty good fe-co to around 12" or so, not sure if I'm approaching the deeper signals correctly.
Anyhow, nice find!

Hey SDart, the "thunk" that I refer to is when you get a low reading 12-02 - 12/20's sound that is barely audible as opposed to a deep , silver , high pitch "chirp". The sounds are not smooth but are audible with fairly reliable numbers. I search the S.W.Fla beaches and have found 3 large platinum rings with my 30/30 and all were deep and thunkin" ! Almost walked away from 2 of them.

Thanks for the clarification. I did find one plat but it was in the same hole as a clad dime so it gave off a strong but mixed reading. Good luck out there!
