17" coil

Just got 17" coil in the mail a few days ago. Ground is froze so can't swing. Just wondering if there are any success stories of finding coins with coil that were missed with stock coil in really worked sites. Hoping this coil will shed some new light on pounded sites. Any feedback would be much appreciated thanks and happy hunting!

The search function for this forum will help you find success stories if there are any like you are looking for...

I haven't taken my seventeen incher off since I bought it mid last year..Personally I use it for better ground coverage in the fields I detect..

Like Gkman I rarely take mine off . I think most of my areas I work have been hunted hard. In fact I know they have because all the old coins I find are very deep at 7.5 inches plus that puts them out of range of the most commen older machines. They are a little tough for me with the stock coil but with the 17 inch most are loud and clear.

I also find some older coins that are shallower but always close to junk so I think they were passed on by other hunters.

The only other time I find shallower old coins is when hunting obscure areas that others didn't have time to work. Very few coins but some dandies.

And yes you will be busy digging in worked over areas.

You will also be amassed at the ability of that big coil to pick out the best target amongst trash and yell coin.

What kind of depth can you guys get with the 17 incher, and does it make the 3030 alot harder on the arm, front heavy. I am in N.H. and find alot of silver at 7 or 8 inches or so, and bet there is older stuff even a little deeper. I am thinking of spending the coin on one, are you guys glad you did?

I've had my 17" on my CTX for several weeks and it has already proven to be a great investment. Our city park has been hunted hard over the last 5 years with E-Tracs to the point where searching it isn't worth the effort. My first hunt with the 17" on my CTX was in an area we hit extremely hard and I was pulling keepers every few swings. Can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can get back out there.

These keepers were pulled in 2 hours from an area hit extremely hard with our E-Tracs and no longer would produce. Yes most were deep but a couple were in with a piece of rusted iron and not that deep.

I personally do not have a problem swinging the larger coil.I cannot say that I found any coins at any great depth with the coil.but I think that is because I have hit the limit of where coins are...when you're pulling out colonial coppers, how much deeper can anything else really be..

To DEEPON. The 17 is heavier but dosnt make it nose heavy if you keep it close.

There are some nice advantages to the 17 that helps offset the heavier weight. You are making allot fewer swings to cover same distance and you are digging a little more often due to extra depth and coverage. So there is that.

The problem I have is more the end of swing torque on my elbow, this can get very tiring but not so much the weight.

One thing I have learned is if I'm going a full day I will switch the coils from stock to 17 and hit the most trashy areas of coarse with the stock coil. It only takes a few minutes to switch and I'm going back and forth to the van for a water break anyway.

A whole long day with the 17 and ya your gona feel it. Would I ever sell it now that I've tried it ? Heck no!

You guys are gonna love it! :yo:

when I got a sunray 5 inch for my etrac I got another lower leg, how are most of you guys changing the 17 inch coil out, are you just changing the coil or are most getting the lower leg too, on my etrac I actually got a new lower and upper leg, I could change the coil in a very short time, but it was a little costly, I really only needed the lower, but one of the cam locks on the upper was giving me some problems, mainly thats why I got the other upper.I am really thinking of getting one of the 17 inchers. Do you guys think you get maybe 2 inches or so more depth out of it?????

In air tests, for what they are worth....you'll find the 17 incher will give you more depth.

I don't have an additional lower shaft, they are crazy overpriced.

GK - I just looked up the price of the lower shafts. Yikes, crazy overpriced might be an understatement. When I do add a coil I'm not getting one. Between the cost of a smart coil and a lower shaft you could buy a pretty darn good backup detector.

I can't say it hasn't crossed my mind to come up with an aftermarket one for say 50-60 bucks..I know the real ones are carbon fiber blah blah blah. But yeah you could buy a nice detector for the amount of money you would pay for a coil and a lower shaft...

When I got my 6" coil I bought an additional lower shaft for it. It make it so much more convenient to change coils that you do it when otherwise you might not want to bother. I would start with my 11" and then make note of busy areas that I wanted to go back and check with the 6".

Having said that I probably will not get a third lower for the 17". I will just decide ahead of a hunt whether to start with the 11" or 17" and set up one lower that way and then as always have the trusty 6" ready for action.

To Deep-on

I looked at my notes from when I first got the 17 and on my air test with a silver dime I went from 8 to 10 inches exactly. That is where the coils hit with a loud and clear 10-43 on display. Now with iffy signal I'll just say the stock coil lost the dime completely at 10" and the 17" lost it at 13.5 "
So I would say easy 20% depth gain.

I think some guys get even deeper using only four tones, so I've heard.

My record is a 9" measured dirt plus 1" grass on a wheat penny in the field.

I don't understand how changing the tones can in any way effect the depth of detection?

It would seem that detection happens first and then tones report it. So I still don't see choice of tones effecting the depth of the previous event - detection?

I agree but I think I read that the less filtering your detector has to do the better it will perform. I'm no way an expert just making conversation.

This is great info on the 17" coil from those using it. I've been thinking about getting one to hunt the woods without a lot of trash, farm fields and areas around old farm houses. You thoughts?

Nothing I would rather use Don... You can't beat the coverage, and as some people have recently been saying on another thread located here http://www.findmall.com/read.php?86,2032342. It hits hard on small deep silver
