17" coil

Glovas

New member
Any one had any luck using the 17" coil. I hit the Courthouse in Enid Oklahoma Thursday for the first time with the Ctx and the first coin I pulled out was a 1918 wheat penny. Myself and several others have hit the park using a E-trac but I was wondering if I would gain any advantage with the 17" coil. Thanks

A bit of depth and alot of coverage. I have been using that coil exclusively for some months now.

After reading this thread and others that seem to tout the advantages of the 17" coil, I put mine on tonight. I've been using the stock 11" since I got the machine about a month ago. Went out with a good friend two days ago, he has a Whites Vx3 and he was able to pick up targets deeper that my CTX could (would). I say would, because I may not have had the machine set up in the optimum way. I could usually hear the target he was looking at break the threshold noise, but, it would not readout the Fe/Co or give a depth estimation or target display. After a little playing around with settings I was able to pick up a couple of them. These were all deep targets with weak signals. I can say that he was using the 15" SEF coil, which I am sure made some difference. I am anxious to see how he fares now that I have the big Kahuna on the CTX!

I will let you know......we meet Sunday at an old football field in a really small town.......old field, very old.

The Minelab CTX 3030 17" coil will gain you more depth and coverage area. Can be a difficult to use if you have multiple targets. Good luck! ;)

Well, my luck with the 17" coil was no so good. The area we hunted was heavily trashed and I was having a LOT of difficulty trying to pinpoint any good looking target.....just too many things in the way, regardless of how I had the machine set up. Went back to the smaller coil with a lot better luck. I know for sure this large coil is NOT intended for use in heavy trash. It will probably be great in a large field with few targets, but, I will have to become proficient with the smaller coil before going to the big one and in an area that is not ate up with trash!

It is a lot heavier than the 11" coil and one can feel the difference after a short while of swinging, especially for a 67 yr. old that isn't in all that great of shape to begin with! For now and until I find an area that is not trashy, I'll be staying with the smaller coil!

Best wishes to all for good finds,

Heavy trash = 6" coil
medium to light trash/nails = medium coil
light trash/nails, ballfields, large grass areas, fields = large coil

IMHO

Good thread. I just purchased the 17" coil to use in a few wide open grassy spots I hunt as well as a few plowed civil war sites. Hoping to gain a few inches, time will tell and I will report.

I love the 17" you get more depth but less seperation so you have to have the right site for the coil. If you need anyhelp give me a call! good luck
