17" Coil question

twangator

New member
Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have the CTX with the stock coil. In a couple of weeks i will be going on vacation to Mexico in my previous journeys I used the AT Pro which was stellar. I found 1/2 Real Cobs from the late 1600's and many other 1/2-2 reales from 1700's & 1800's with the AT Pro, most of the targets were between 4-6 inches. I wanted to get the 17" coil to get more depth out of the CTX but I'm afraid the coins that I've been finding might be too small for the larger coil. Can anyone shed some light on this coil? HH
Thanks In advance for your help.

I forgot to mention that the area im detecting is pretty much trash free, (No pulltabs, cans, foil or zilcons) but there are iron relics. Simply said, I dig every target there. I use the Gone Hunting combined mode with the open screen.

I would just stick with the 11 inch coil. Plenty deep enough and great on small coins. Now about Gonehuntings program. It may work for him in Oklahoma, but it may not work for you in Mexico or where you live. Digger and I keep telling you guys to learn the machine first, learn what it's telling you, and then tweek it for your soil conditions. There are many other programs that you might find useful in the CTX Resource center.

Hello GateKeeper, So far I have found GH program easy and precise, but i will take your advice and look around in the Resource center. What program do you recommend?

It's not what program to use. There are so many variables. Is your soil mineralized? Is there trash? Are you looking for relics, jewelry, old coins? How old is the area you are hunting? That's the beautiful thing about the CTX. You can make a program to fit your needs. This is what I would do. Start off with one program. Try low trash, then Ferrous Coin, High Trash, and so on. The try the different tones such as 50 tones and then maybe combined. From there you can adjust your response from Normal to Long to smooth. Long is better suited to less trashy envirements such as a field. Then try Deep on/off, or Fast on/off. Play with your Gain, Threshold, and Threshold pitch. What the common mistake newer operators are making is thinking that one program is the end all be all. It's not. If you do, you will be limiting yourself and the machine from obtaining maximum capabilities that the machine is intended for.

Thank you GateKeeper for the advice, I dont have too much time to play with the detector from here til I leave on vacation. But i will experiment when I return.

Your welcome my friend. We just don't want you to get stuck with just one setting. I would suggest you to select the LONG response which will definitely help with those smaller targets.

No problem with the smallest of targets. Also coverage leaves you feeling like nothing got thru. Pinpointing is a little rough though. Clean soil should be awesome. What tupe of area are you hunting? Good lick with the trip, may want to pack an AK though, fairly dangerous it sounds lately.

I dug a Barber dime at around 10" with the 17" coil a few weeks back. Have a video, you'll have to scroll back and find my post.

Pinpointing was off for me at first, but you get the knack of it with experience. Likewise, you "get used" to the weight balance with the 17" coil. It is different than the stock as far as weight balance, and feels different on the arm, shoulder, and back. Still, not so bad that you need to resort to an aid (unless you have some orthopedic issues already). I used an aid for the E-Trac, and feel no need to strap it on to the CTX with the 17" coil.

If you are familiar with using the "wiggle back" pinpointing method, I would recommend using it along with standard pinpointing to get the feel of where the machine is telling you the target is located.

On your concern with "small" targets -- I found two deep Seated half-dimes with the 17" coil at a Civil War campsite. I cannot recall for sure, and am too lazy to look through my past posts, but I believe they were around 7 inches or so??

I think Ray-MO said it best when he refereed to the 17" as the Street Sweeper. You will feel like a Wookie among Ewoks with it. Seriously. Enjoy and happy swinging.

I have the 17 inch coil also. I used mine on the beach. The thing can cover some area. That is what I got it for.

Question is 17" coil find much deeper coins than 11 inch regular coil? I have 13 inch Detech and not too well. Also pinpoint is not easy. Maybe I need more play with it to gain skills

In addition to pin pointing difficulty, the machine tends to over-state the depths with this coil on... IOW, it will say shallow targets are deep.

I want to know the same, will this 17" coil get more depth?

Yes, it will get more depth. Probably 1-2 inches. More importantly, it will scream for 8-9 inch pennies like they are much closer. I have come to use the 17in coil as a "closer". After I clean out a good spot with the 6in coil, I will go through with the 17 incher and pull a few more keepers out.

The only problems are the depth issue already mentioned and additionally surface coins or trash will drive you crazy...
