17" Coil indications: Spurrious indication...or not

A question from a green CTX 3030 owner here:

On the beach in wet sand using "Beach" mode (unchanged settings) every now and then as I'm walking along and sweeping (slowly), I'll get what sounds and looks like a solid hit on something. When I check these out, many times I can't find another indication so I move on. Sometimes I get a second indication the very same tone and screen indication as the first, but can not find a third indication no matter how I try or direction I swing. Is this a false ping; something to do with sensitivity setting? The 11" coil really didn't do this.

This weekend, I did find a very small gold ring about 8" under the hard packed sand with the 17"; this made a definite tone with consistant screen display of 12-07. ....consistant until I started digging then the tone went away for awhile, then came back.

just the other day my hunting partner yelled out "hey this signal is exceedingly spurious!"

When I am detecting
And I hear the cry spurious
When praise I was expecting
I become furious
When the ring of gold
The first I've seen
I'm told is not old
And will turn a finger green

Ha, good one Bell!

Stogger, Sorry we are having fun with the spurious thing. At least we are keeping your post up to the top of the list of threads...

Are you perhaps picking up metal in your boots, or some digging implement? Have you tried to pinpoint the object to see if it is really something that is there?

My guess otherwise is some falsing. Hopefully one of the folks that hits the beach all the time has a better explanation..

Hi Gary, these guys gave me a good laugh! I worked with radio and microwave frequency receivers (for astronomy) so lots of "spurious" signals there :)

Maybe these are just false (not spurious) signals. One time in particular, the signal was too low 12-04 or 11-04 to be caused by the scoop. I heard it twice during sweeps. But nothing after that. For this instance, pinpointing showed nothing.

Other times pinpointing did pick up something even though I lost the normal sweeping signal. I never found the object causing the pinpointing sound. I tried pattern 2 (in the normal Beach Mode) to check if anything showed up in the "rejected" area, but nothing was there, even though it made sound during pinpointing.

thanks,
Mike

Im guessing that your beach has minerals such as iron and salt that, even though you are in beach mode, will still get a return read to the coil. Your reading seams to change a bit as well from your description, as in not always hitting on the same spot. I think this is more common for all of us than we admit. did you try lowering sens to see what would rule the random hits out?

Thanks for the comment. I was in autosensitivity mode. It was rather high at about 26 or 27. I did not take it to manual and try lowering the sensitivity. Next time I'll give it a try.

Thanks! Mike

As far as the loss of the 12.07 signal I thought maybe the ring was disturbed while digging and now on edge, later signal reappeared after ring was again disturbed. Just a possibility. However I have heard of this happening to the minelabs on occasion. I heard it from one of the guys who does YouTube reviews on detectors in the UK. I forget his name maybe Garys detecting UK????
Anyway he had a signal disappear on video, said something like a minlab phenomena, and to just keep digging cause something is there. The signal later returned and he recovered the find.

I personally have not seen this yet.

Well, that spurious, furious, disappearing signal is one of my most consistent issues with the CTX. At least 10-15 times a day I will dig a signal, great everything, icon, target, numbers, repeat, etc., then take a shovel or two out of the hole and the signal is gone! I move away, get another signal come back and no signal, no numbers, no nulling, nothing. But, I have found that in the vast majority of instances if I take one more little scoop out of the hole the is back! Either in the scoop or in the hole. Also, if I pinpoint the hole, where no signal at all is indicated, I will get some signal to pinpoint.

I like the info on the 17" coil as I plan on using it soon at what we call a beach, Galveston. Which is now covered with about 2 to 4 feet of Sargasso seaweed! The city runs front end loaders almost all night to scoop it up, pile it up, or take it somewhere but within the next few hours is it everywhere again. Can't fish the surf because of it but I suppose one can detect in the water and remove it regularly from the shaft.

Thanks for the info. You confirmed very closely what I see concerning the disappearing signals with my 17" coil. In similar settings , I did not experience this with the11" coil.

I'll enter a separate subject "A newcomers experience: 11" coil compared to 17" coil" to give you more info of my experience comparing both.
