17" Coil - Cleaning it up...

kanaka2

New member
For those 17" coil users out there. Did any of you take your new 17" inch coil to those parks you've already cleaned out and find that you were able to actually find additional silver with the 17" that you weren't with the stock 11"? I mean, did you hands down come home with silver that you had previously not been able to detect. Were you racing to your local pounded parks and finding deep silver that had gone missed? Just wondering how impressed you were with your purchase. I purchased the 6" looking in that direction and results have been marginal. I still prefer the stock 11". Wondering if the 17" coil will be worth the expense.

Whats your experience?

Jason

Took mine to a ghost town area where my partner and I pulled a lot of old silver from. The stock coil got most of it, but I did find a quarter at 12", a dime at 11" and an IH at 11" (all were solid signals with the 17") so it did prove it's usefulness. I have several other old coin hotspots I can't wait to get this coil on to.

Too heavy to make it my normal use coil, but it can do good when you have deep coins.

Thank Jason,

Great info... hmmm - like you - am intrigued to throw that coil on some of my hunted out parks.

I used my 6 inch in some iron-ridden places and pulled a 1797 lc with nice details that was missed by the 11, and a merc in another place that only had a squeak. 17 is great for field hunts, you can cover every inch of ground with ease. I will be going back to some parks with the 17 this year for deep goodies. It does seem worth it to me to have all the coils.

Hi Jason I use the 17" coil almost all the time. I'm sure there are places that are more suited to the stock coil but for me the 17works the Best.I do feel that I have pulled more silver out of places that I have hunted before. It seems to have a little more depth on coins that are on edge. And I think I get better coverage. Now most of these places are bigger area's but I pulled 3 barber dimes from a really trashy area that others past by because of junk ( tabs, foil, bottle caps, ect.) so it will work in the trash but it takes some getting use to. I agree with Grumpy. I have all three coils and I use the 17" almost exclusively, even in trashy sites. I have to admit it is heavy but I use the PROSWING-45. I find that the 3030 is heavy no matter what coil I use. The 17" is followed by the 6" that I use up close to fences and playground equipment. I never use the 11".

I have yet to find silver with my 17" anywhere that I have previously found silver using the 6" or the 11". It seems like my 17" is way more sensitive to EMI than either of the other two coils so I have to run it with lower sensitivity to keep from going nuts from the abundant interference chatter.

I live in the northwest which has notoriety for having really bad ground. I had been hunting with an Explorer SE Pro. I purchased my CTX in late may. I used the 10" coil to become familiar with my machine. I was not impressed with the lack of depth compared to my SE. After becoming familiar with my CTX I switched to the 17" coil. Immediately I began to pull deep silver in places I have pounded with my SE. I even noticed many more silver relics and jewelry coming to light. I use the 17" exclusively now. The only time I put on the 10" is in freshly plowed lots like house tear outs. I find the 17" does not do well where there is little sod or black dirt on top of the river cobble and pea gravel that my ground consists of. I almost cry when I have to take off my 17" coil because I love it so much. I even find small jewelry and relics including some small earnings with the 17". The depth reading is a little off unless the target is about 5-6" deep. The 17" is more sensitive to EMI than the 10", but it is way better than my SE was. Since May, I have pulled almost 100 silvers with my CTX. Many of these were from places that have been pounded since the eighties with many different machines. I I have been extremely impressed at how it nails deep silver on edge. That is something that rarely happened with my SE. It seems strange that many coins on edge that are less than 5" deep make two signals side by side. When I dig in-between the two strong signals that is where i find the coin. The coins on edge like this even pinpoint in two different places. The 17" is also a little tricky in trashy areas, but I still have been able to pull a lot of good stuff out of the trash. I am amazed at the target separation the CTX has even with the 17" coil on. It is not uncommon to dig coins with iron in the hole with them. I have even dug some coins with nails right on top of the coins, although the signals are sketchy. The coil is a little heavy, but coming from the Explorer with the in-line probe by arm was already accustomed to the weight. The CTX is so light and ergonomically balanced I find it feels close to the SE. The 17" coil works great for the ground I hunt. In extremely bad ground I will sometimes switch to the 10" coil, but I usually wonder why I cannot get any deep targets with it. I bought my CTX used and the 17" was brand new. I often wonder if my 10" coil is defective.

Perhaps you read elsewhere where I suggest you compare coil signals without digging. I bought a 17" used and it didn't perform as well as the 11". Sent it to Minelab and they found the same thing and replaced it for me no charge. The new one is noticeably better than the last but I'm not overwhelmed with it - perhaps because I think the 11" is so good. The 17" covers more ground and finds pencil eraser aluminum nuggets or rusted 1/4" nail sections a foot down or more - but I think the 11" does too!
This detecting hobby though is starting to take a toll on my elbow. I'm not sure a Proswing would help as it is side to side movement not lifting that is getting me. When I switch back to my Surf PI it's a real eye-opener.
