1500 called them wrong

My minelab buddy and I went out Sunday after a week of rain to an old home site. We found twenty-seven wheat pennies and a liberty dime in about an hour. My 1500 was calling every one of the wheats a dime. Is the because of the high moisture content or because the ground hadn't been disturbed for years?

It will often do that depending on soil conditions, coin corrosion, patina on the coin, coin position. And it will ID dimes as pennies based on the same conditions. Nothing to worry about, just one of the quirks of detecting.

Just wanted you to know this also happens with an explorer II and other detectors I have used. Just something you have to get used to.

and if you find a detector that can always tell the difference let me (us) know.

With my 1250 I found that 90% of the time IH's read 7 on the scale, wheaties read 7.5 and memorials read 8. Maybe it's the depth. Dimes are almost always 8.5. I would always bet that at 8.5 if it is a coin it's a dime.

Fine line between a copper penny and there is many variations in content to a dime, add depth mineralization and even many 1-100 meters get fooled.
Have to add with an Explorer knew it was a wheatie before I dug due to its placement on the site screen and usually was a 27 while a dime was a 28. However in a park with newer pennies many times was fooled as they came in as a dime..No unit is perfect but a good meter provides a lot of info...

thanks guys, thought maybe I knocked something out of kelter, but I figured it was because the ground was pretty well saturated, and the soil hadn't been disturbed for years as it has been in pasture. thanks, again for the responses. Bill

One of the many mysteries of detecting.

My 2500 does the same thing sometimes, especially if there are pine trees around.
