150 or 250? Bells and Whistles?

Hi:

I'm looking at buying my first detector and what I hear about the new Aces is very interesting. I wonder how much difference there is, though, between the 150 and the 250 in everyday use. I'm thinking of other things I've bought with lots of bells and whistles. I play my electric guitar through an effects pedal with 36 different settings, and I use 3 of them 90% of the time. Same with my digital camera - 14 programs and I use 2 of 'em.

Those of you who use the 150, and I realize there aren't that many of you, do you find yourself wishing you'd gone for the 250?

Those of you who use the 250, do you really use all of the features, or are there some that you haven't used since the first week of trying everything? Are the notching options and pinpointing really that handy?

Any replies would be helpful, and much appreciated.

Colin

As it has pinponting. You will be thankfull after several hours of hunting that you can retrieve a target with ease.

The feature you'll be most interested in is the pinpoint feature on the 250. Get the 250 as without the pinpoint would be like playing your guitar with no strings.

Yeah I can never understand why anyone makes a detector these days with no pinpoint, especially an entry level model for beginners. Pinpointing is the hardest thing to learn for beginners. Seems to me the manufacturers are stumbling over a dollar to save a dime and cutting their own throat. Beginners who can't find targets don't buy any more detectors, at least not the brand that doesn't find them goodies.

Have only tried the 150. We mainly hunt the beaches, reasonably soft sand above the low-water mark and dry sand, use a shovel or scoop and tend to dig all. Small narrow holes don't usually work well in the dry sand (they fill in too fast) so the pinpointing isn't such a major concern when initially digging - although probably a few seconds saved once the target is out of the hole and not quite visual yet. The 150 works very well in the area and conditions we focus on so no regrets there. Plug and play at its very best. clapping:
If you plan to mainly hunt harder ground though Colin, go for the 250, it will no doubt save you a LOT of time and leave the crater making for the meteorites. ;)

Have fun with whatever detector your choose and look forward to your future posts and finds......

Yeah Ian a scoop, sand, and a 150 work well. On manicured lawns it would be a disaster. HAA. You found anymore rings lately you ring rascal?

Bill

Looks like I've got my answer. I was leaning towards the 250, on the principle of "better to have it and not need it ...", and here you both mention the pinpointing.

I appreciate the advice.

Colin

Oh if you were to compare the two side by side you would quickly learn how bad one needs that pinpointing.

Bill

Yeah you must have a ton of them by now or at least enough to open up your own shop. That would be a gig for the boys, operating a jewelry cart and peddling rings and things on the beach. HAA.

Well if you have not made up your mind yet... This may help you. I bought an ACE 250 2 weeks ago, and when I use it, I have used every option so far. Pinpoint is absolutely THE BEST!! I have an Automax V2 pinpointer too which makes finding anything super mega easy. my wife has the ACE 150, she wanted something "less complicated" as she put it. It's also a GREAT machine, and very easy to use, but every 10 minutes I'm getting called over to pinpoint for her.... UMMM that is why I have an Automax V2!!! So if you are going to use one of these as a primary detector, BUY THE 250...The $50 more it costs makes a world of difference. This machine blows any of the Bounty hunter machines I've had out of the water... I had it together the night it was shipped to my door in 5 minutes, and ran outside in the yard of the apartment complex where I live, I found $1.08 in clad coin within 10 minutes. It was dead on with all signals. I LOVE THIS THING!!!

Have you found a dealer for the detectors? I bought both of mine from WWW.KELLYCODETECTORS.COM. they have excellent service, and free goodies with every purchase. but when I bought my 250, they were on backorder... Gee could this mean they are popular, and as good as everyone says???!!! I SURE THINK SO...

I agree. Even with the 250's great pinponting ability I still need to use my Whites BullsEye for those odd shaped items that throw off the signal. And not to mention those teeny tiny pieces of metal that look like a tiny rock or something.
