15" WOT coil on Excal

Scotto's Excal

New member
Anyone else out there using the 15" WOT coil on their Excal ? Have had great results. Get ready to dig deep !!! Hope to hear from other users and share tips. Scotto

Ok here's my questions
besides more deepth what else do you really gain by doing this ?
What do you sacrifice by doing this on a Excalibur ?
Either model ?
Why would I want to do this ?
I have an Excalibur 2 and really like it I think I'm getting all I can with it
in a stock outfit, but now I'm wondering what else can be done to make it better ?
I need info,
thanks
John

Well according to Clive, you get increased depth, the ability to get those heavier and older drops that are out of range of stock VLF detectors. Cons however are, according to Clive's book is that its heavier to use and tend to leak if the proper precautions are not done to the water proof connection points. Also pin pointing is more difficult than with a smaller coil. But if you read Clive's books he'll explain more advance methods of pin pointing that might help when using the WOT coils.

I would stay with the stock coil until you get use to the excal tuning...the bads are ..can not swing that baby in ruff water, pinpointing would be a challenge in the ruff water, tuning it is a bear...but in some places, ...the more area you cover with a WOT the more the information the excal has to process.........the connecting of the WOT to the excal is a weak link, not to say you would have problems but that is one more op for some thing to go wrong.
The goods would be............. more depth, more coverage..And I would bet it is a killer in fresh water, and wet sand...in some places. Just like almetal works in some places and not in others...I would say the same about the WOT........I have a WOT for my SE and I would rather use the stock coil most of the time.

maybe the WOT guys can share there experiences with you...I know max had one...PM him and he will let you know the goods and bads..Good Luck...

on wet/dry sand the Wot and S12 are great coils.more coverage per swing..the down side is in the water the resistance is so bad i can only hunt about 30 min before my arm falls off!

U get more depth, cover more real estate and if U have detected with a DD coil 4 any length of time U won't have any more trouble pinpointing than with the stock coil. If U install the connectors properly they WON't LEAK. If U can hunt the rough water with a stock coil U can hunt the WOT. If it is 2 rough for the WOT it is 2 rough 2 hunt anything
I have about 100+ hours on mine and works great BTW it WILL READ A SMALL GOLD CHAIN

after owning and using the stock 8",the stock 10" and the Sun Ray S8 and the S12 and the WOT.on Excal's and Sovereigns my findings (for me) are the WOT is great if you are Hulk Hogan .in no way can i swing it in water over 30 min.just the size of it creates a lot of resistance.the S12 is much lighter but still has resistance.my choice in the water is the S8...on dry/wet sand,i like the S12 its lighter than the stock 10"coil and more coverage.i guess that's why they make so many,so everyone can have there own choice.

erikk, i like that color, better than the lime green:thumbup:

Well not hulk Hogan (I am 69) but I can hunt most all day with no problems swinging the WOT.Ya gotta learn how to hunt it-go with the flow not swinging it like U are weed wacking. BTW this week we hunted 7 days in a row

Don't SWING it, just let it glide. U R after coverage not speed. With a straight shaft U should B able to get at least a 7-8 foot arc and just poke along (I only hunt the WOT/Excal in the water.) On the wet I hunt an Explorer/WOT with a swingy-thingy

I tried the WOT on the Excal for the beach, and found a few downsides: First, it seems that I had to lower the sens. somewhat, just to get it stable, threshold smooth, etc... For example: If I could run, on a certain section of wet salt beach, 20 manual, then the wot, it seemed I had to drop to 15-ish, just to get the same stability. So I ended up asking myself if I just "gave away" any depth the WOT had gained?

And to be honest with you, I'm not so sure it gets coin targets much deeper. Because as you know, there is a point of diminishing returns by going to larger and larger coils. At some point, you will only get larger objects deeper, not coin-sized objects. The normal point at which this "diminishing point" comes in for most detectors, is around 8" to 10" -ish coils. But the WOT seems to be an exception for certain machines. Like on the Sov for instance, I have witnessed first-hand, a Sov/Wot combo user, effortlessly dig a corroded zinc at 1.5 ft., and correctly call the ID before digging. But when I tried the Wot with the Excal, I did not see those types of spectacular depth gains. And to the extent that I did possibly get deeper, the "warbly-ness" and "fishiness" was a nuisance. The sounds just seemed to be less concise, and of course, pinpointing difficult, etc..

My experience could just be because of particular nuances of my particular Excal. You know, one made on a Monday, and another made on a Friday. Or perhaps just the minerals on just the beach I was working at. Because with a bigger coil, you inherently "see" more minerals per swing swath, when compared to smaller coils. So perhaps at a low minerals beach, I would not have had this problem.

I have also used the Wot with the Explorer on land, and can definately say it does not add depth to coin-sized targets. Just increases scope of coverage, and perhaps more depth on targes larger than coin-sized. But once again, it might have just been the type soils I was in, or just my particular Explorer with Wot combo.
