15 KHz vs 5.5 KHz ?????

Hi everyone, new to forum. I have a question for anyone who can shed more light. Bought two Master Hunter search coils (5.5 KHz) Got the mailed to me and found that some one had at some time replaced connectors from the original 5 pin to 4 pin Groundhog which I know is 15 KHz. The woman at Garrett didn't know a lot. My question is what results do mixing Freqs on machines have on that equipment??? and any other info that might be related if you are willing and able to share. My Yhanks go ahead of me if you would

"The woman didn't know a lot."
She is new, and your right, she doesn't know much. She
has used a couple detectors and has a list of commonly
asked questions. Can't hold that against her, but I know who
she is, so when I call Garrett I ask for Sue or someone else
who has been there since creation. I would shoot an email to Garrett
himself, or to his son. They WILL get your email and answer
when time permits. They are usually good about getting back to you.

I was told from the get go, that you could use the 250 coils on the 350 Ace
but not vice versa because of the difference in frequency
but there seems to be some dispute. As for YOUR question about frequency
your better off emailing Garrett, the man who engineered the machines.
Good luck

...Michael....not sure what you meant about mixing frequencies on a detector??....did you mean using a Groundhog coil on a Deepseeker....should Not work ....even if it did the discrimination circuit will act screwy and will Not accept certain targets....back about the 4 pin and 5 pin connectors??....most of the Deepseekers and Groundhogs use the 4 pin connector....in the last years or two before these detectors were discontinued ...Garrett switched these detectors to the 5 pin connectors...not a lot of them compared to the 4 pin but a few do show up on Ebay.....I have the Garrett Gold Hunter which is an enhanced Groundhog it has the 5 pin connector....

I have read a lot about them and even a Garrett catalog which stated when ordering to specify 4 or 5 pin. I have ADS 1 and ADS 3 and both are 5 pin. I also have three different Groundhogs and yes they are all 4 pin. It also stated somewhere that your gold hunter Groundhog was a hybrid using 5 pins but still a 15 KHz machine. I finally went to Radio Shack and purchased inline Molex plugs so as to convert 4 pin 5.5 KHz coils to work on my 5 pin. I got confused about the 4 and 5 pin coils due to lack of knowledge and over 30 years of distance. I have since learned a little. (sounds scary ) Any way, Thank you for your response.

...Michael...all of the GroundHogs and the Garrett Gold Hunter are 15 KHZ machines .....the number of pins in the connector has nothing to do with the frequency of the detector.....Garrett switched from the 4 to the 5 pin connectors since many of his customers were using other Manufacturer coils on their detectors at the time such as the D-Tex and Gold Mountain coils.......I have been using Garrett's for 43 years...............Good Luck..Joe

I am aware that number of pins are not specific to KHz of the machine, just stating what I have come to be aware of. I know about D-Tex coils, didn't know about Gold Mountain. And, didn't have a clue about reason for the change. Very good to know. I am all analog user and the info is invaluable. Thanks for your info

...Not all of the Gold Mountain detector run at 15 ZKHZ....so if you try to find a Gold Mountain coil to work on a Groundhog .....it needs to have come off either a VIP or one of the old Treasure Hunter, Inc. Phantoms......also be aware some of the Phantoms also run at 5 KHZ....
