15 khz detectors?

Jedi

Member
Nearly all the manufacturers build a 15 kHz detector. It made me wonder if they all basically have the same performance if they have the same size coil? ( depth, target separation, sweep speed).
Thanks

Nope, a lot more to it than that. Depth has more to do with coil voltage, separation has more to do with processing speed and coil design and optimum sweep speed has more to do with the detectors filtering system. (number, type and frequency of the filter(s).

Lots of cars use the same size wheels but lots of differences in performance of each model depending on what is actually mounted on top of those same 4 wheels.
There can be many differences from brand to brand...even between some different models in the same brand line using similar sized coils.

14 KHZ range works great for me. 7 KHZ works for coins, but not as universal of a frequency as 14 or 5 kHz. Many gold machines are in that kHz range, kind of a do it all frequency range. The Fisher Gold bug is a good example of HIGH frequency, but limited to small gold. Not the best for general hunting.

It just seemed like every manufacturer makes a 15khz detector. I thought that 15khz would be the same across the board as far as capabilities. They all seem to advertise the frequency. They don't seem to mention the filters and coil voltage that Larry wrote about. Thanks Larry for the information.

Its usually accepted that the 15Khz freq is a good all round general detecting freq that will cover most needs,of course specific applications the freq can be of course much higher of lower not only by using single freq's but also using multi freq's at the same time. Some machines like the Deus offer say 4 freqs from 4Khz-18Khz for various applications.Minelab use a special Multi freq setup which also has massive advantages.

But for all round general detecting 15Khz is the adopted general everyday freq, you may think that they all would work the same but that is not the case, some are far better than others.

Besides the other variances mentioned in similar Hz rigs, circuit recovery, coil size, etc.......Ergonomics are super important as well...lets say all things being equal on the 14-15kHz rigs...so not all things are the same even if the 'specs' say they are...find a rig that 'fits' you and get as good as you can with it..you will blow the doors off folks that dont...

Theres a guy here I hunt against that has an entry model BH that kills everybody else on account of his dedication, persistence, and understanding of his chosen rig...not saying just any old body can do this, some of us (like me) need some technical advantage...once you find a rig you understand, then nobody can hold a candle to you in field...

I have actually studied and modified a style of hunting around this local guy to take advantage of what I perceive are his 'weaknesses'...which are few...funny thing, nobody knows who this guy is, and nobody cares, to most casual onlookers he's some old dirty bum...he is so invisible but omnipresent on any sidewalk/street tear out it aint funny.....theres a hell of a lot more to success in this sport than kHz...
Mud.

Well there you go Mud--you've blown my cover--now all of computerland will be trying to steal my techniques. LOL
