scott taylor claims he found a cache of 137 gold bars and civil war antiques..It is near delta ,utah...it's in a cave and is attached to dynomite...he told the BLM he wants a finder fee of 40%... KSL 5 news broke the story a few days ago...It's about a 3 hour drive from where i'm at ...Should I take my MXT and and see if there are any other cache's OR do you think this is a hoax? THE BLM SAYS they are more concerned about the dynomite...

I can believe it, there are many stories of this sort of thing happening during the civil war.
I would give it a try if I could.
Just be careful out there and let us know what you find!

I've been caving near Delta UT. and I'm inclined to think local cavers would have found something like this long ago. Also, why so far from civil war action? How old is the dynamite? Personally, I don't put much faith in the story. JMHO

Nobody but Mormons in Utah in the CW period and they would have put the capital to work. Sounds like hogwash to me. :smoke:

Ok was just curious, saw article in back issue of Treasures magazine and couldnt find any other info via Google other than origanal article...

"if it don't make sense, it's not true". ;)

I am 90 miles south of Delta, this story came out several years ago. I didn't believe it then & I don't now, As stated above there was no civil war activity within 400 miles of Utah. There is another story about bags full of Mormon gold in the same area that was lost after a robbery of the Mormon mint, it to has never been found, or at least by any one that told about it.

I'm skeptical. I don't think there are many caves left in that
area to be discovered, if any at all.And yet, consider the dry land of Iran
and Iraq; they are still finding an occasional find in some out of the
way cave seldom visited by anyone but sheep herders.
I'm still skeptical though.

Coloradocav is right dynamite was not invented until 1866. TNT was invented in 1863. The end of the civil war happened on April 9th 1865. I would imagine it would take a few years at least for any of these explosives to be manufactured in enough quantity to be accessible. Besides Americans love a good story about found wealth. This story would have made national news. Depending on the weight of the bars we could be talking about millions of dollars worth of gold. I doubt this story is true.

The one thing that keeps seeming to be missed here is that this cache (if it exists) could have been left there by someone at any time AFTER the civil war. "Civil war antiques" is a vague description and does not nescessarily mean they are relics from an actual battle or camp site. They may not even be war relics but pieces from AROUND that era that were left at a LATER date. If something is dated at an archeological site it can only give an "earliest" date it could have been left there. Be careful of making assumptions and drawing conclusions from the sketchy, vague details in this "story". That being said...I don't believe this story is true at all. Also, the BLM (or any govt. agency) being "...more interested in the dynamite..." than the gold ? Now I can guarantee that's a complete fallacy. I do like a good story like everyone else though. If I lived in that area I'd use that story as a reason to go hunting in any case.

kinda makes you wonder how this guy counted these things up without blowing himself up

I agree with Larry and Judge Judy. THAT DON'T MAKE NO SENSE!

This cache was brought to Utah's West Desert in efforts to launder the gold, by men who got a hold of it many years earlier and shipped it from Michigan somewhere, before it was brought there from the South. They were going to melt it down and brought it there to make it look as if they mined it, and Utah was the perfect place, far from prying eyes. The government, or Army, would have taken the gold from these men, so they shipped it there in an effort to launder it, but it was left behind before all of it was melted down and exchanged. The story is likely true, but the stash may have since been found and hauled away. A metal detector will be of no use looking for such large caches unless they are buried shallow. Most larger caches are deep in caves or mines.
