13 Inch Ultimate DD Coil

floodplaindetector

Well-known member
I just bought one of these coils for ball field hunting and wondering if anyone has logged some hours with this on the Etrac.
I know there are some reviews out there also but a lot of them are with using the coil on a minelab SE.
In the past I have used 12x15 sef coil but am looking for something lighter as my bad rotator cuff (too many flood fights throwing sand bags) couldn't take all that weight after about 3 hours.
Even with using the swingy thingy.
Last year I stuck with the pro-coil and seemed to do pretty well with that on ball fields.
My hunting buddy just bought a NEL tornado 13 so I will be going head to head with that coil on ball fields.
A big reason I got the ultimate 13 is because of the weight.

I would appreciate any feed back or opinions you have about the Ultimate 13 coil on an Etrac. Thanks!

The Sun Ray X12 is of less weight and a very underrated coil for it's abilities and it can be used in wet water conditions compared to the 13in. Ultimate. Just an alternative if swing weight and conditions becomes more of an issue IMHO.

I like it. It does go deeper than the stock coil and seems to hit nickels better for some reason. I have a couple videos using it. You can to my channel and look for a video called
"Minelab Etrac - Digging different signals" and "Testing the 13" ultimate coil for the Etrac, Explorer series" You can get an idea how it handles different targets.

I've had the ultimate coil since right after it came out. At first I didn't care much for it but then I slowed down a bit and started listening closer. I rarely take it off of my etrac now. I have several coils but it is my go-to coil because it seperates nicely and picks up the deep stuff that my other coils have missed. You will have to log some hours on it and dig a lot of iffy signals but once you get the hang of listening for those faint signals (I hunt wide open with TTF and in manual sensitivity for the most part), you will find some great treasures. You have to be willing to dig some trash now and then though. I still dig an occasional rusty nail when searching for the deep goods. Most good finds will register a decent signal two ways at least (I often walk a circle around the faint signals while swinging over them, when I have the time to do so), rusty nails will fool you but usually they will not repeat when you switch directions, or they will almost seem to change positions and move over several inches from where it registered initially. I love it when relic hunting but also have used it to find a lot of silver in the park that I beat to heck with my other coils.
HH and enjoy

Hi Bill
I know you have a lot of experience with your Etrac and the 3030 and I've been wanting to ask you your opinion on buying a Minelab Etrac versus the CTX 3030. Do you think the 3030 is worth the extra money over the Etrac? Which one would you buy? It will be primarily used for coinshooting. Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer my question.

Just got the ultimate for my etrac also. One thing I noticed right away is that it hits harder on the outside edge of the coil than the middle on deep stuff.
Is that the case with all coils or what? Makes it more difficult to center the target for digging.

I found little difference in depth over the procoil in my soil.
It is a bit of a moot point since you already have the Ultimate but I am finding the NEL Hunter to deliver about the same depth with superior separation than both the Ultimate and the stock coil.

The original Post is an older thread complaining of weight causing aches and pains. However, the Ultimate coil is an excellent choice for an all-around open parks detecting and is much lighter than the SEF 10x12 coil. But IMO, the best invention to counter the weight of the detector and use of large coils, is the Minelab Pro-Swing 45 harness. Once adjusted properly this thing really works and allows full swing maneuverability with only two fingers allowing any size coil choice. I never go without it !

Don't have an Ultimate but its cousin a Tornado.
My take, these coils are only marginally deeper but the real advantage IMO is just enough better tonal accuracy at max. depth to compel a dig albeit the ID numbers will usually but not always be out in left field depending on soil, etc. I'm talking 10 to 12+ inches here.

I'd suggest to anyone new with either of those coils to dig all deep 10+ inch iffys to get an idea between junk and keepers. This is especially important if you hear conductive tones tending to ignore fleeting or makes no sense IDs. IMO, tones are king for the deepest of the deep targets.
