13" Detech - Some comments, air test numbers and a short video on an 8" coin

Just a short video to give you an idea of how the 13" Detech sounds on a deeper target (in somewhat iron mineralized ground). It hit harder than the stock 11" would have. I had the volume gain on 23 which did make the coin come in softer.

I have to say the 13" Detech does pretty well in iron for it's size. It is also pretty sensitive to really small pieces of metal. I dug (and was fooled) by quite a few very very small pieces of metal (You know, the kind that you have to really search for with a pinpointer and the kind that you dig an 8" hole to find, but after much searching realize they are 1" deep!)

The coil is quite lite, no noticeable difference between it and the stock (850g compared to 800g respectively - with cables). If your trash level isn't too high and the iron isn't as well, I think the 13" Detech is a very good choice and could be used instead of the 11" stock coil. I do notice, due to it's size of course, that it can't quite separate like the stock coil. BUT it does better around EMI and I have no problem maxing out the sensitivity with it as well. (I was pretty close to a road and residential area).

Some air test numbers I did a while back:

The EMI wasn't too bad. Numbers with fairly repeatable (dig-able) VID's and sound. Manual sensitivity at 30 with a reduced discrimination pattern - Noise Cancel Channel on 9.

The Stock coil was noisier at rest with the jumpiest VID but still acceptable.

Nice video and coin once again Albert and Thanks. I may be getting one of these 13" coils for my Etrac too. Been really thinking about it for a while now. May have to sell a few of the coils I got now as most are just sitting around.

Hey Tom, I have to say the coil is surprising and the weight makes me want to use it more often. If your ground isn't full of trash and iron, it might really be your go to coil. So, getting another 1.5" - 2.5", depending on your soil, and having more coverage, is nice. You might even get much more depth than what you are getting now IF you can't get your sensitivity up there, because the 13" Detech seems to be better in EMI. I think I get around 1.5" more depth as the iron mineralization limits things.

Right now I think I'm just going to settle on keeping my 6X8 SEF, 11" Stock and the 13" Detech. If I ever get in super heavy iron or trash I'll need the 5" but 3 coils mostly suite me.

Thanks for the info. I finally broke down and decided to order one of these coils. It will stink waiting 6 weeks (which seems to be the norm lately) to get my hands on it. I have the perfect place in mind to try it. I hunted a courthouse lawn years ago, and it was almost completely silent. I look forward to seeing what the depth of this coil can pull from it.

I'd love to hear how it does on a beach in the wet sand. I'm really tempted to get one but for me it would be a beach coil.

I would bet Albert that that 6X8 SEF is pretty close to that 5" sunray coil for it's seperation in trash/iron capability. Really only has a 6" detecting DD section. I will be getting one of the 13" coils myself soon. Guess they are on back order now from what I'm reading on here.

Just ordered mine yesterday from Kellyco. $199.95 +shipping (211 and some change total). Got a call today to let me know that it was on backorder. I sure hope it doesn't take too long. Am looking forward to swinging it on some sites I've hit with my other coils already.
