12x10 DD vs Spider (stock coil)

I've read (on this forum) that these coils should have the same performances, with advantage of 12x10 DD to cover more ground.
I've just done some air tests with my modded cibola.
Same settings (GB and discr. untouched and sens. to max).
12x10 gets 7/8 cm more than the stock coil. It's an easy guess that in hot ground DD advntage will become stronger.
My 2 cents...

My somewhat limited experience with DD coils over concentric coils shows the DD's of comparable size to give a bit less depth until you hit ground mineralized heavily enough for the concentric to begin to lose depth. Then the DD's will outperform them to some degree In mild to moderate soil, I use the concentric configuration 95% of the time. The DD's do give a bit more coverage in the long dimension of the windings which often lets a larger DD coil slip thru trash a bit better than a concentric of comparable size. My two bits.

The 12 by 10 seemed to make my Vaquero a little front heavy. I would rather use a concentric in trash. If there was a nail next to a coin I would get a one way signal. Also the larger coil is harder to get between the bushes. It seemed to go a little deeper up wasn't worth putting up with the size and weight to me. It might be good in really bad ground.

I'm a strong believer in "if you like it, use it" so I'm not trying to make statement that is definitive or the final word by any means. That said, due to weight and maneuverability I find I seldom use my larger coils unless I need to cover a lot of area in relatively clean spots. I keep several larger coils around so they are available for that purpose or if I will be hunting an area I know is likely to have goodies a bit deeper than most. On the average I find myself using the stock coil and smaller coils much more than I do the large ones. I've found many coins in trashy areas using the smaller coils.
Happy Holidays and dig deep and often,
BB

I never used a DD coil that I was aware of.

I have a 12X 10 Concentric Coil. Just for
comparison to tha earlier comments about
tha 12 X 10 DD coil.

I'll add my two cents about tha 12 X 10
concentric.

It is heavy and I didn't like ta use it at first.
But I went to a site I had hunted many times
with several Tesoro machines.

I went over it with my 12 X 10 a couple of
times and pulled two more mini balls and a
few other goodies. It is very sensative for a
large coil and pin points well.

I like it more now that I have used more. But
save it for deep and hopefully more open places.

The 10x12 is much more comfortable to use if you shorten the rod and hunt closer to your feet. It also is a little deeper than the stock coil, and of course covers much more ground. It pinpoints well, right at the tip. I generally hunt wooded areas and fields, so it's perfect for me. Hey, it covers about 110 square inches, while the 9x8 covers less than 70. That's over 50% more ground coverage-------equals more finds.

I have come so close in getting the 12 x 10 a few times but most of my detecting is trashy sites or hard to swing areas. I use the smaller coils the most. If I get into more open cleaner areas, then I settle for the 8 x 9. But I almost always get into trash so I haven't been able to pull myself yet on getting the 12 x 10. Someday I'll probably get an itch and have to snag one up, maybe 2
