12x10 & 15x12 Owners- I Know You're Out There So Speak Up!

There are too many of these coils floating around out there not to have hardly anybody saying anything about them. They are all the rave on the FBS forums. I'm sure we'd all like to hear how you like them. You already know where I stand with the 15x12 and I'd soon like to buy a 12x10 because that might get deeper in my high mineral soils than the 15x12 can due to it seeing too much ground. Not sure either way on that yet with more testing to do.

Mainly, here's what I'm sure we'd all like to know:

1) Which Coils You Have
2) Is your SEF your deepest coil?
3) What kind of minerals do you have. In other words, is it only getting deeper in low minerals or do you find that it beats the stock 10" in high minerals as well?
4) What's the deepest coin you've dug with that SEF coil, what kind of coin was it, and how mineralized was the ground.
5) What don't you like about your SEF? That might be a hard one because there is nothing I don't like about my 15x12, other than the fact that I haven't seen it pop coins deeper than the 10" yet.
6) Are you popping coins on edge or in iron more than usual with your SEF?
7) What are the top 3 traits about this coil you like best?

As it stands right now I've been getting my "fix" on SEF field hunts by reading about them in the Explorer and Etrac forums. They've been very positive, even liking them better than the Pro Coil.

So give your opinion on these coils and please don't worry about some yahoo busting your chops about what you have to say. Remember that we all have different soil so your opinion is right for you at your locations and nobody can say otherwise.

Hey Critterhunter. I've read your posts regarding the 12x15 SEF- intense. I have a 10x12 SEF for my Sovereign, but I'm so new to this hobby I can't answer most of your specific questions. So far I'm having trouble getting used to it. I expected it to be more stable than it is. Pin pointing is still presenting a challenge for me on all my medium to large coils. I wish there was a 6x8 SEF available for Sovereign. The 6x8 I have for my DFX is the bomb. It's super stable, allowing me to run deep. I can't seem to get the same performance yet from my 10x12 SEF on the Sovereign. Hopefully this thread will fill up because I am interested to hear what answers other Sovereign owners have for your questions. Thanks. HH. Matt

On the pin pointing I usually hunt in disc and when I get a signal and am having trouble getting a good fix on it I switch to AM,PP and its dead center of the coil....

I finaly made it out this weekend with my new sef coil 10x12. It was only my second time out with it and I have owned it for 5 months! Yes I have been busy.
Let me say this: I went to a local park that I use to learn my detectors. Since I did not want to dig anything deep in this particular park I hunted in silent mode. Targets were everywhere. So I went to max disc. I covered a few areas that I had been over with my sovereign before only with the 8"bbs coil, minelab advantage 8" & 10" coils, garrett ace 250, whites xl pro and tesoro silver umax.
I dug 2 quarters, 10 dimes, 5 lincolns and a nickle and skipped all the zincs pennies, all clad in over 1 hour. Here is the catch all coins were in the 1-3 inch range!!!! all on edge!!! I know for a fact I passed over these with my other detectors that MISSED such shallow targets! Even the the sovereign with the 8" coil missed. The coins I found have been in the ground for some time!
This sef coil is incredible! I can't wait to go back to my old sites! This coil should be called the COIN EDGE BUSTER COIL!
The signals are very clear as well! This coil does what they say it does!
I will use this coil in 2 ways
1. shallow targets in silent search.
2. deep targets with threshold and zero disc.
3. AM pinpointing is super on this coil.

3. AM pinpointing is super on this coil.

wpruden,

What place on the coil did you find the pin point to be?

Yea, I've also found that the 15x12 gets coins on edge very well. I've noticed that the Sovereign using even the stock 10" Tornado does a better job than any machine I've owned at hitting and giving a perfect ID to coins on edge, but I have noticed that the SEF seems even a little more good at it. For that reason I keep reminding myself to dig those shallow "clad" or "penny" hits because there is a good chance they could be old indians or silvers that despite being shallow have been missed by other machines and coils due to them being either on edge or masked in a certain way that the SEF has no problem with.

For pinpointing I think they 15x12 is better than the 10" Tornado for me. It's probably the best pinpointing coil I've ever used that was say bigger than 8" on any machine. When I hit a target I'll walk the coil backwards as I slowly wiggle it until I just lose the target. I'll then advance the coil a bit to where I just pick up the target again. Once done the target will be right at the base of that "V" shaped part of the top of the coil. You can do the same with the tail end of the coil and that works well in water since you can stick your big toe right into that V to mark the spot for your scoop, but I prefer the tip of the coil when land hunting. Also, when the target gets past a certain point in depth (like say 8 or 9") I can't sometimes pick it up in pinpoint, and even if I could I think it's now pinpointing the target more with the middle of the coil rather than the base of the V. In that case I'll leave it in discriminate and do the above method to find it with the V. That also works well in trash where pinpoint might be confusing you by sounding off to nearby targets as well. At least for me on my GT pinpoint does not go as deep as discriminate so I'll use discriminate on the real deep stuff with the method above. In fact, this coil is so good at pinpointing with that V at the tip of the coil that you really don't need to flip into pinpoint to locate it and it will still be right on target for the most part. Since I have a remote pinpoint switch I throw it over to pinpoint though anyway, but as said if it's real deep I either can't hear it in PP or I think it's only picking it up more towards the center of the coil. I've tried pinpointing with the center of this coil as well as the stock 10" and for me it's too hard to hear the subtle difference in volume when the target is dead center. For that reason with the 10" coil I use the tail end of the coil to locate the target.

The best way to learn pinpointing is to put a coin on the ground and practice. Raise the coil 4 or 5" though because if you keep it real close to the coin it makes it harder to do and will throw you off.

If you think the 12x10 is less stable than the stock coil then I'd say you either I running sensitivity too high or you have a bad coil. Everybody I've ever heard comment on these coils for the Sovereign, Explorer, or Etrac says they are more stable than the 10" or 11" stock coils.

Hoping to hear more field reviews of these coils. In particular I am interested in knowing if they are going deeper than the stock 10" for you even in high minerals.

Coins are found dead center of coil.

Concerning the Sovereign GT, is this dead center going to hold true from one 12x10 to the next 12x10 made by the same company? All 12x10s made by any company? The stock 10" ( what I have)?

I have been tempted to use a method I read about, here I think, where you tape targets to a large piece of cardboard and lay it, targets facing down on the ground and pin point the targets so that you can mark the coil you are using to reference the exact PP location on the coil.

Hey Critter...
After reading your other posts, I ordered one from Kellyco, and they are currently backordered. Mine won't be in until 1 sept. 10 . It's being flown in from Bulgaria, or somewhere. Is this where all of them are made? HH

Thanks for the info .....That's a bummer !!....I was just getting ready to order .... Looks like my tests will be a whille Critter ......Jim

You guys are going to love either one of those coils, the 12x10 or 15x12. And I really am looking forward to the tests you are going to do, in particular against the Etrac with the same coils. Once I get my hands on a 12x10 I'll compare it to the 10" and 15x12. As it stands right now I really should get out and field test the 10" and 15x12 on a known fringe depth target. When I do I'll post my findings, but please go ahead and do yours as well because inquiring minds want to know how results compare or differ due to soil and user, etc.

The 12x10 and 15x12 SEF coils will pinpoint like a laser by using the base of the "V" shaped tip of the coil or the same "V" shaped tail of the coil. Wiggle the coil as you advance it or retreat it until you just lose the target, then wiggle back until you just hear it again. The target will be right at the base of the V. I'm telling you it's the best pinpointing I've seen on any coil bigger than 8" on any machine I've ever owned by doing it this way. I tried using the center of the coil but I can never get nearly as accurate that way myself. You can literally stick a screwdriver in the ground by using the tip or tail of the coil and base of that "V" and 9 times out of 10 hit the target on the first try. It's that good. If the target is right under the surface then lift the coil 2" or so off the ground when doing the pinpoint and it will sharpen up the aim on it. It's so good that I'm finding it's almost as accurate/easy to pinpoint in discrimination mode as it is flipping over to pinpoint. I often pinpoint in discriminate when nearby trash targets cause multiple hits in AM PP mode. Works like a charm. After you center in on the target as described above then note the location by eye and do the same thing at a 90 degree angle. It's accurate enough not to have to go this extra step but it makes it a hair more precise.

This has worked so well for me that I've taken to using the tail of the coil on the stock 10" for pinpointing and it works almost as good. the target should be right at the edge of the heal of the coil. For the SEF coil I use the tip of the coil on land but the heal of it in the water as it's easy to then just stick your big toe in that V and mark the spot for the scoop.

Looking forward to hearing how you like it. If you've got some other coils how about a comparison in depth in a coin garden or something?
