1293 coin found in Wisconsin

My girlfriend had the scanner for a few days. I found this last week but didn't make the time to do a scan.

I saw a guy working on a house in a nearby town. Stopped in and asked if I could detect. English was not his first language.

Found a couple of wheats and a very nice buffalo, then this coin. Almost exactly the size of a dime and was using my older-not-focusing-up-close eyes trying to figure out whether I had a worn seated, barber or what. Finally made out some curlicues that I figured must be Arabic text.

I spent some time in Egypt years ago and learned enough to read numbers, had to use the internet to refresh my memory. Then researched the coin to find it is an Ottoman empire coin.

1293 Arabic calender equals 1876 in ours. On the other side of the coin is a number 19, which is added to the first date, so 1895. Not nearly as impressive.

Chinese and Japanese coins often work the same, they start with the beginning date of the current ruler, and then the year of the reign they were minted is added on.

Wonder how it found it's way to a yard in Elkhorn, WI.

Real neat Chris. Looks to be a one or two piastre Turk/Ottoman. I have a small collection of Ottoman crowns (large size coins) from about 1600-1918, so this find really interested me. Could have been brought back from someone travelling or after the war. Alot of these coins wound up in England after WWI.

Hey Chris,

I found something similar here in Chicago area a few years ago, but it was about the same size of a silver half dime and was holed. A friend told me the coin is an Ottoman 1 qirsh and the date translated to 1849-1850.

Yours looks to be in much better condition.

I suppose from the wear perhaps a returning WWI vet may have brought it home. I saw some similar on Ebay or something similar, looked like it was worth perhaps $10. Sound about right?

That is a unique find Chris. Always makes you wonder how it found it's way to your location:thumbup:

It's what makes this hobby what it is. Cool find indeed.
