I'm looking for a diving/land detector. I've used the CZ-7a for awhile know and the 1280's price is in my price range, and of course the Fisher warranty.
Any good or bad reviews?
Thanks

Built like a tank and a bit heavy on land but it excells in fresh water..Been around for many years and some feel best freshwater detector ever made...
Of course CZ20 is recommended for salt water...

I have one and find its great, all we have here is fresh water, I have the 10 inch coil for greater depth. it has bouyancy so will float beside you when you are in waiste deep water, heavy on beach, but I chest mount it so no problem. They say they aren't that hot on small gold. I am wearing a$125.00 Roots watch that I found 2 years ago in shoulder depth water and a good 8 inches or more in the sand. Great detector and the battery life is unbelievable, 72 hours or more. If you get one you wont be dissapointed.. HH Ken

Our club had a little poll a couple of months back. The great majority of the guys in this area like Whites and Tesoros with just two of us(including me) using Fishers. When water detectors came up ,however,it was a different story. All eight guys who are water hunters use the 1280X in freshwater here in north Alabama. They consider it more stable than the Tesoro Tiger Shark.Several say they did OK down on the Gulf beaches with it;something you can`t say about the Tesoro.

My 1280-x has proven itself in a great way-I had a Whites Surfmaster2 before---no comparison!!!the 1280x clean blows the Surfmaster2"out of the water",no pun intended.I will only use mine around the Great Lakes area-cant say how it is in the salt.

Heck the 1280 X has been one of the top water machines in fresh water for over 10 years..I guess areas differ and some companies are preferred by most for land hunting....As far as salt water unless you want Excedrin headache #1 try a CZ 20...

I have made some wonderful finds here on the east coast of FL.with my CZ20, it's one of easiest detectors I have ever hunted with.

I can't believe Fisher, stopped making them and the CZ5's, but I guess they know what they are doing! They all ways come out with Excellent detectors. HH,Bernie

Before the CZ-20, FRL pushed the 1280 as being good for both fresh and salt-I've found it to bee really deep-remember in runs in the VF range.

I have hunted salt water beaches since there was dirt. I like the CZ20 most times and others it has trouble with the ground in some locations. Under these conditions I switch to my Excal. 1000. Both have been very deep.

Hello Dan-Pa, seen your threads on the other forum. The CZ20 is a fine detector for any beach, fresh or salt. Some say it won't find small gold. It will find earring backs and diamond studs. I can't wait to see what will replace it as it is one fine detector for the water. The 1280 only has one tone and sucks at small chains. But chains aren't worth much either, just fun to find because of the challenge. I've had no problems with Tesoro Tiger Sharks either. Just don't like to have to open the box to adjust three controls and seal it up again. a downside.

1280 has a little trouble in some salt water areas and not others since it doesn't have a salt mode, nor adjustable ground balance. It can get unstable in the wet salt sand with black sand thrown in. But great in it's time. I have worn out a couple as it was my first water detector and for some reason prefer it for diving over the Excal or CZ20.

The 1280 was originally marketed as a Salt water detector, and it excells there too-not just fresh water.

I have no doubt the 1280 does well in freshwater...but what about on land hunting for high coins...I would think w/the low 2.4 freq that it would hit coins at very good depth and do well in iron. Yeah...only one tone and just a disc...but I'm just curious if anyone has used it on land for hunting coins and how does it do? When I hunt coins, I often go after just high coins/silver and copper because the IH's and nickles come out of the ground here so corroded. I've thought of getting a 1280 for freshwater and as a high coin land hunter...anybody? :)

The worst problem with a CZ on the Gulf is using a 10.5 out in the surf-man that thing will beat you to death. Still having some good finds west of Searim towards High Island, down to Rollover Pass.

And it works well in saltwater, as I've used one for years on the Gulf Coast. Its the epitome of simplicity, with just one mode and is slow enough that pinpointing is easy; and get the 10.5 loop and turn down the sensitivity if it gets trashy [remember you cannot just switch out these loops]. It is very deep on coins inland-but you will want to hip mount it. And get a regular Fisher land detector rod setup-even hip mounted the rod it comes with is heavy.
