1266X Question

if you can get it to smooth out its probably a simple short in the wires at the connector. Easy to fix by yourself or any local electr repair shop. Also check to make sure the flexible wire coil is not shoved into the connector too far, that can cause a short.

Have you heard this when wearing phones ? If so, could the wires to them be faulty ? In 16 years of using a 1266 I have had this happen a couple times - but never with the machine only. Good luck, Steve in so az

Check to see if you have any dirt under your coil cover ( that is if you have one on) Sometime very fine black sand can collect under these and cause the metal detector to become unstable, false, and or chatter.

A bad coil connection could be the issue, therefore try reseating the coil connector several times this may improve the electrical connection. Also as J Savage suggests, if you wiggle the coil cable and it starts to chatter or false there's probably a fault within the cable or connector solder joints, this usually caused by a pulled cable wire. I've had to repair several solder joints at the connector, once because of corrosion and few times due to pulled wires. good luck
