1266X owners lend an ear!

When bench testing my 1266XB(standard coil), I cranked my sens and disc to the max and found nickles and dimes (nickle clad) does not discriminate out! That's gold and ring territory.
A very fine gold chain with no clasps on it still is heard at 10 disc @2 inches. (micro jewelry test)
All the while 3"nails are discriminated out completely.
Common doctrine dictates to use as little discrimination as possible for jewelry retention.
Have I stumbled on a new facet of the many venerable Fisher 1266X capabilities?
Anybody else use this setting for hunting?
Gentlemen, start your machines and check back!

Hi
Very interesting. I tried it on mine and got similar results. On a silver dime I got close to 10". On clad I seemed to get a better signal when I
got a little further away, like 4" and out. I was just about to sell mine. might have to run a test in a spot that still holds a little silver. Very trashy and very tough ground.
Good work!!! Thinkin outside the box.

Have a great 4th of July

Hey don't sell her just yet! It is one of the most ergonomic detectors made! We may have started a cult following with this ol' girl! Wonder if this trick works with the other 1200 series? I gave my Dad my 1225X,maybe I'd better give him a call.

Hey Pennyfinder
I did some more air tests today outdoors. Hope to get to a park in the next couple of days.
Here's what I think. With the disc controls set to max you basically disc out everything from 0-5"depending on were you set your sen control. Now you can use the sen control as a disc.control. With the sen control pulled out and rotated to the 5 o'clock position you can detect a silver dime in air
from 0- about 8 or 9 inches with a good repeatable signal. with that same setting you totally disc out everything else from 0-5 inches. past that point you will start to get a signal from a pull tab but it sounds different than the dime. you will also get signals from nails and other items but the tones are definitely distinguishable from the silver dime. Now if you start to crank up the sen control you can start to detect modern coins from 0-4or 5 inches and still disc out pull tabs and nails.
So my thinking is you could use it as a silver detector or a modern coin detector simply by using the sen control. This might all prove unworkable in
the real dirt, time will tell. I'll keep you posted.
I've never been a member of a cult before!!!!

Your results are as mine Turtleman, pretty cool! As for the more mineralised soil matrix, one can use smaller coils and lift the coil to where you have a better signal to noise ratio. Kind of like highbeams in the fog. Small coils are what you need in trashy areas for target seperation anyway and they cope with higher mineralisation better.
What is really an eye opener is the fact iron is discriminated completely out but allowing the nickles and small gold to come through. This dis-spells the reputation that Fishers see nothing but iron and masks all the goodies. They are killer on silver! I regularly find "fishscales" (pre 1922 silver 5 cent Canadian coins, the size of you baby fingernail and easily lost) up her in Canada with the 1200 series detectors.
I've also experimented with the Gold Bug 1 with using the ground balance to comp out iron and dig nickle on up for micro jewelry.
I'm going to see if my CZ5 reacts the same way as the 1266. The CZ5 is able to run high sens and is excellent in heavy mineralisation. The CZ5 has a ground balance too, I'll to try and comp out iron and max the sens.
Running your detectors in this manner, you will obviously loose some depth but look what you've gained in ability and versatility!
These Fishers are some of the deepest machines ever made to this day, anyway they have depth to spare!
Dave Johnson designed these 3 detectors among many others, it would be great if he saw this topic and and could join in. It would be enlightening to say the least.
The VLF detection technology hasn't advanced much in horsepower since 1985, just with the computerized discrimination aspect. I rather like flipping a control knob with my thumb...Simplicity is Efficiency!! Keep me posted.

I'm also in canada. I've never found a fish scale, didn't know what it was till you mentioned it. I also have a cz6a, but haven't tried any of these
idea's on it yet. i was hoping to get in a hunt today but didn't work out. The final test is always what works in the real dirt. Have you had any success with these techniques yet, or have you only done air test's so far? Keep us posted.

From Canada eh? What part?, I'm here in BC. That CZ6a would sure come in handy on the "wet coast" for beach hunting, she's a keeper.
Few minutes to spare today and went out in the garden and buried my 1973 US test dime to about 7 inches.
The 1266XB was dialed to max disc and max sens. She ran a little chattery, and my yard has a lot of iron trash.
She picked up the dime with a good solid hit! Things are looking good sport fans! Later on I'll try a thin ladies 18k diamond ring and some silver coins. Stay tuned.

I'm also in BC. Abbotsford to be precise.
Hunted a sports field for about an hour today. 2loonies(one visual), 2 dimes. one nickel(visual)4pennies one soccer spike.
Both discs set to max. Sen normal, about 11 o'clock. Have company coming for a week so won't get much hunting in for a while but next hunt will try a real trashy site were I am pretty sure there is some silver hiding. I will set the sen to about 5 o'clock for this site. Thin gold won't be detectable but rings will be. Try this setting on your 73 dime. I'm thinkin it won't be detectable , or will just give a chirp.
Maybe we can get hooked up for a hunt one day.

cheers

Hey you live close by me I'm in Newest! Maybe we will do a hunt soon. Our soils are about the same are you having trouble running full sensitivity?.
I just broke my plastic tighteners center shaft in my 1266, which teed me off on this rainy day,so I stayed inside , had tea and mulled it over.
The "Maximum Overdrive Mode" (good name eh?), mom for short:laugh:, will be a good high grading silver sniffer in shallower depths, I'm sure. More later.

Finally got out for a short hunt. Took the 66 to a park that I have found silver at before. ran disc at max, and played a little with the sen in normal position ,at between 11 o'clock and 5. This is a pretty trashy park and was getting a lot of chirping. found a 49 nickel at about 2". found a few other coins but no silver. So far I can't say wether there is any advantage to running the machine like this. all of the targets I found I could have easily got with my cz6. How are you doing with yours? Did you get the locking hubs fixed? The ground is rock hard right now so I think I will restrict my hunting to tot lots and the beach until we get some rain.

Hey There Turtleman,
Good you got out and did a hunt. Did you manage to detect the fireworks in English Bay last night? Sure wish I could have. As for myself, Ive been up to my arse in alligators:starwars: and didn't get out at all! Although I have tried to fix the lock nuts. The little rectangular, chicklet like rubber locking friction pads have to be replaced, so I cut off a 1"piece of hot glue stick in half lengthwise using a utility knife. Then I cut shoulders in it so it doesn't fall through the square hole in the center stem. Next I locktited the nut back together. It worked for the lower stem nicely. Now I have to fix the upper stem locknut, I actually broke the plastic nut itself, but I found all the little pieces. I'm thinking styrene model glue might do the trick.
I'm finding the "Maximum Overdrive Mode" will find a suitable application in the bark chip tot lots, give it a try as there is a fair amount of jewelry there.

PennyFinder

Hey Pennyfinder
Didn't do the fireworks. Long drive for me. Did you get out?
How are you setting yours for the tot lots? I actually use my gold detector in there and do ok. I found with the 66 at max sen that It discs out all gold, but i'm only running my sen in normal mode, somewhere between 11:00 and 5:00. I still think that these settings will be a good silver setup, just haven't put in the time to see if that's the case.
If those lock nuts don't hold up I'm thinkin about selling my 66,if your interested.

My settings are full on sens and full on disc,or no less than 7, she still picks up thin chains. Maybe I have a defective 1266XB? It is an older unity, works good though.
Which gold machine do you use for the tot lots, My GMT works very well for this. Also a good use for the Gold Bug 1. They both air test a 18k thin ladies diamond ring at 12-13".
Nope I didn't get to the fireworks, maybe I'll sneak out in the wee hours for the 29th. The city beach clean up crew starts at the crack of dawn. Must have coffee for this hunt!
Don't really need another 1266 but curious on your asking price for someone else. Sure like your CZ6a, just what we need here on the "wet coast". :clapping:

PennyFinder

I also have the GMT. I don't think Mine will test a ring that far. Might have to get you to show me how you set yours up.
I was thinking of selling the 66 for 200.00.
With this heat, hunting the beach in the wee hours is the way to go. Good luck.!!! I'm tempted to go down with my 6A and my 5" coil. If I decide to go i'll let you know.

Turtleman

After 12 midnight when the crowd is all gone by then, I'll be there with my CZ5, see you there!:detecting:
For the depth on the GMT, lock the ground tracking, crank the sens all the way. You should get 12" on the ladies 18k ring.

PennyFinder

on my third one. I always set disc on 4 and dig most signals. If it's an older place I go to 3. If I go any lower I dig paper staples at 6 inches. I do get a lot of junk but thats the price we pay. Got 30 solid gold items this year so far and about 8500 coins.
I dont think another detector would bring me more than the 66. Up to 969 nickels for the year and thats the measuring stick for finding gold I believe. steve in so az

Steve in so az, that's an impressive track record, good shootin' man! The 1266 is one of the great ones for sure!:hot: The settings you run makes alot of sense, my philosophy is the same as yours, dig junk and you will get the gold. Thanks for the tips.
Hey there Turtleman, Yup I took in two shows and detected till dawn. It was very serene and I was in the zone. The first night I found lots of coins about $12, and a really nice cell phone.
I called the guy up and told him it's safe and sound and where to meet. He was so happy to get his life back he flipped me $40 for my troubles.
The second night I hunted hard an found $24 in coins one of which was a Jefferson 1968 s nickle, some hippy jewelry, a cool mini maglite, and a half dozen bic lighters.
There were about 6 other detectorists and some found rings alas none for the PennyFinder. The tv news cameras came at dawn and were picking me as a subject, so I scurried off out of reach to no avail, for there I was on the 6 o'clock news walking away from the camera with a persistant slow overlapping swing of my detector as they faded away for a commercial break. My 2 minutes of fame came and went. I said to the wife, "Boy the camera sure adds 20lbs eh?" she replies "Nope , that's what you look like!" Looks like I have a growing following I wasn't aware of!:stars:

Nice bling there Steve in so az, congrats! Was that a park hunt with the 1266 ? Think I'll take my 1266 for a stroll tomorrow, it's good to see your success. Keep'n Beepin' ! :twodetecting::detecting:
