12" Coil for the MXT?

srf2112

Active member
I was wondering what is commonly considered by the experts ( by that I mean all of YOU) to be the optimum 12" coil to use on this machine. I have read/ been told that a 12" coil may be the way to go in certain situations on the beach ( I live on the coast) and also in some larger areas like sports fields, school yards etc. I am pretty new to this craft and there are so many options and claims out there that it's hard to make an informed decision. I want to keep my eyes open for a good deal and would like to know which coil to look for specifically. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks- Scott

A lot depends on which coast you live on. If you are on the West coast with black sand, it probably would not work very well. All other low mineralized ground and sports fields it will cover the ground fast and in low trash areas, it get you some extra depth too.

I used my 12inch yesterday around an old house a mile from me.
I hit a large number of targets that I couldn't detect with my 6x10DD.
It's a great coil for deep seeking, and especially for cache hunting.
I'm gpoing to try the Whites 10inDD when I can get the money together.

You're asking WHICH 12" coil would be considered optimum. The only one I've used is the White's and not on the beach as I'm not close to any. I agree with the other comments - good coil for non-trashy locations, good coverage, good depth. Personally, I prefer to use the Whites coils rather than aftermarket, but many seem satisfied with the Excellerator coils from Kellyco. My two cents.

Thanks all. I actually posted this when I was just starting out detecting with my MXT and was told by a vet that I needed to get a 12" coil for it. At the time I had no idea what choices there for my MXT as far as 12" coils. After 2 mo's of using it I've become a lot more knowledgeable and realize that the 12" coil is probably not a good choice for my area. I was thinking of getting it to hunt salt-water beaches but the black sand factor is very bad here. Thanks again for all of the input and advice.
