12.5" Coil questions

I just won a bid on a "gently used" crossfire 12.5 inch coil. I haven't done much relic or cache hunting yet, but we have tons of ghost towns not too far from here, and I figured I will try my luck.

I have also heard of people using the big coils to go to places already hunted, such as old school yards. Has anyone had success with this?

How much more depth can I expect?

Those large "pizza" coils on the Garretts work great in hunted out parks and sports fields where most of the good and bad targets have been removed. They also can work good in farmers fields. You might find an over abundance of signals in a ghost town, and the bad signals could mask the good ones. You might get 1-2 more inches of depth using this coil. Sometimes the ID is off a little too. So, dig all iffy signals. Good luck! :)

You'll cover a lot more ground and gain 2-3 inches in depth. The rule of thumb for coils is that under ideal conditions their depth equals their diameter.

I have one of these for my 2500 and don't much care for it! It is heavy and throws the entire detector out of balance. My bad back hates it and lets me know it! The gains are not worth it to me. You can cover more area quicker....if you don't wear yourself out, and gain a couple inches in depth...which is debateable in my experience. Jim

THanks for your input!
