10X14 DD wont penetrate the ground!!!!

Keith Southern

I have 2 infinium Ls detector's...One had a short on the connector so its at Garrett being repaired right now along witha cracked 8 inch mono coil...

I have another infinium with the stock 10x14 dd coil and that coil just does not have any depth at all.. compared to my one with the 8 inch mono...

heck I can dig a target on top of the round with the big DD and cant hardly find it in the dirt pile...seems like I can hear it on the tips but not on the center...

very starnge ..

Think it's the coil or the machine??

I wont have another coil till friday to test it ...

Keith

Keith.

The big DD should have similar performance to the Big mono on coin size targets; For example, a quarter in air should be detected out as far as 30 cm (low/Hi Tone) and give a strong signal at 14 cm. a clad one cent should be detected out to 18 to 20 cm (strong at 10 cm) (hi/Lo)

The big DD is weak on very small targets like small stud earings where the 10 x 14 & 8 inch mono are often better and give a more positive tone.

You did not say what the target was that you were refering to.

Fisher G.

Yeah, the hot spot on that 10"x14" DD is on the toe. It's not sensetive to small targets like the 8" mono is. It does go very deep on larger targets in heavily mineralized soil.
Good luck. Happy Hunting!:)

Have been testing my new Infinium LS with now over 15 hours in the saddle and am having a difficult time with the stock 10x14 DD and penetration as well. NO problems balancing the unit out at the beach, have been at a remote beach with no electrical interference at all and with the unit running super smooth after following the instructions found here on ground balance. I am barely able to pick up a clad quarter at 5-6 inches, dimes and pennies on the surface hardly ring at all and big pieces of iron and other junk sound like small deep targets at 10-12 inches. Am able to pick up pieces of metal as small as rusted fish hooks at a few inches under but it seems that everything so far that is the size of a US Quarter or smaller all but disappears once I have it out of the hole and again, the holes are not that deep for what I would expect from this thing. This beach has yielded up much silver coin and many gold rings with both a White's XLT and later a Minelab Sovereign XS with stock coil and a WOT. Have gotten silver dimes at over a foot deep in the surfline and rings at that depth as well. What gives?

Get more depth out of the smaller 5x10 elliptical that I bought for gold mining and it is a darn sight easier to use....I thought the 10X14 DD was for mineralized soil. Any suggestions on the ""best""coil for beach coins and rings and even for parks for coins. I've found a bunch of coins using the 5x10 both on the beach and along sidewalks but the 10X14 has been frustrating. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong. I'm not a novice at the detecting scene and knew the Infinium would take a while to learn, actually sold a Minelab Xterra 705 to buy this thing for use in nugget shooting out West. Thanks!

Maybe the stock coil is bad....i had the same problem years ago on my first Infinium and one of the channels was out on the unit and would not pick up coins at 1 inch. But since you do well with the small DD then I'm guessing it is the coil. The big DD will go deep and should be smoother in the surf than the mono's.

Call Garrett or send them the coil for testing. Can you pick up a nickle at 5 inches in the air?

Alan

Ganixie.

With the Infinium and the 10 x 14 DD you should be able to detect a clad quarter out to approx 12 inches in air (weak signal) and 6 inches a very strong sig (Low / Hi)
The monos are more sensitive than the DDs and are great beach coils. The 5 x 10 DD is a good beach coil also but will not get the depth of the 8 or 10 x 14 monos.

Going outside to test the 5 inch nickel and 12 inch quarter at this time...

Okay, air test with the stock coil....clad quarter weak signal at around 8 inches, strong at 5, nickel rings loud and clear out to 8+ inches. Going out to check silver quarter later on.

Nickel picks up out to 8+ inches in the air....better even than a clad quarter which is very weak at around 8 inches.

Sounds more like a Channel problem in the control box.
Should get a verystrong sig on the qtr at 5 inches and a good solid sig at 8 inches then weak at 10 inches and very weak (allmost imperceptable threshold waver followed by a weak lo/hi tone)) at 11 or 12 inches.
try the coil on a high grade gold ring 22k or better)or other solid gold item of around 6 to 7 gms of similar size to the qtr. If it is no better on the gold then you have a control box cct problem. Be sure disc is at zero and threshold audible with ground track in lock.

Thanks for the input.....will be testing in the AM. This is a great FORUM.

Okay, 10x14DD tested and performs as described by Fishers Ghost, picks up my 22K wedding band really good out to 8 inches and much sharper and crisper than the quarter....nickel picks up very good as well and even better than the bigger quarter. I don't know what I was expecting out of this thing. I had used the Pulse Star II and another , Pulse air III from Germany and was expecting more depth. Will be investing in the 8 and 10x14 cocentrics along with the waterproof headphones. I do like the machine and love the smooth operation once you get it balanced and tuned to the area you're in.

QUESTION: Will be heading to the west after this next round of medical tests and treatments to look for nuggets, am I correct to use the 10x14DD and my 5x10 DD in the heavy mineralized ground for nuggets? or would it be better to use an 8 inch concentric???

I've got a place out there where I know there are some deeper nuggets that I couldn't get to with the Minelab X-terra 705 that will get the go over for about a month solid with this new Infinium. I did manage to jack a 1.57 Troy Ounce nugget along some bedrock and am going for a rematch along that area with the Infinium. Counting on there being some smaller ones in the heavy mineral that my Minelab just couldn't pick up as well as some bigger ones down deep that were also out of range.

For the Infinium in high iron mineralisation the DDs are fine, they are not real flash on small gold less than around 0.5gm. The 8 inch mono is good for the small stuff and if it will run quiet then use that. if the ground is heavy going and you think there are nuggs around the 1 oz mark that are deep 12 inches plus then go with the big DD. Most people Here in Aussie tend to use the monos and are prepared to put up with a bit of noise in the extreme ground.

If you have all of these coils then take them and try them and remember to go slow and low about 1.5 foot per sec and get the coil as close to the ground as possible without bashing it about on the rocks. Also if you have a bit of trouble with the GB then don't be afraid of setting in a bit of disc up to not more than 3 as this can quiet some hot rocks. Only set in the disc after you have ground balanced with the disc set at zero and remember to reset the disc to zero before you do any re ground balancing.

Finally getting used to this thing. Using the stock coil I have been pulling some old coins, (wheaties and silver rosies) really deep on a beach as well as finding a small gold cross and a silver hoop earring. This thing picks up pull tabs at some really extreme depth which just all the more convinces me that I'll do well on gold out west. I do need an adapter so I can pair up some decent earphones on the land detector. Any leads on where to secure these at a reasonable price??

Loving it!

Ebay...do an Infinium search and they should show up..

Good luck!

Alan

Going to ebay as wel speak! Thanks

Just remember that PI machines don't air test well due to the circuit design. The Infinium as you've noticed is capable of hitting very deep targets once you get used to the sounds and adjustments. I've pulled deep jewelry at beaches that have been pounded with every top brand machine out there!

The Infinium never fails to amaze me in the black sanded beaches I run it at!:garrett::usaflag:

Hey diggindirt, what coil do you use on the beach??? I've used the stock coil for some really deep stuff along with a 5x7 eliptical that is a pure pleasure to swing and fairly deep as well. Need to outfit my baby with the best as well as pick up a set of waterproof headphones for bad weather.

I've got some medical stuff to endure and then after Christmas I plan to head back out to the desert for some nugget shooting in Arizona and Nevada. The only time I really feel alive is when I'm at 4000 feet elevation or above and any temperature below 70. Its almost like the clock gets rolled back 15-20 years. The darn treatments for cancer cause as much or more damage than the disease does but all things considered, I'd much rather be alive and hurting than the alternative. Sometimes I think the only thing that keeps me going is "the next big adventure". I've swung a detector all over the US, the Yucatan and parts of Europe. Love the nugget shooting in areas that are too remote for most folks to go and put myself on a sundown time to get to bed and sun rise, coyotes howling time to get up. Love watching the stars and counting meteorites while drifting off. Happy Thanksgiving. Didn't mean to ramble on but did imbibe in some wine with dinner and am wont to ramble more than usual when the drink reaches full effect.

I use the 8" and the 10x14" mono coils. I like them because of the lighter weight and ease of pinpointing (good on small stuff too)!

I find them to run real smooth and hit hard on targets on the wet sand and in water. I still use the 8" mono for most of my deeper water hunting, but
like the 10x14" mono on the wet sand with some water hunting thrown into the mix.

I wish you much luck and success in the nugget hunting department, and will keep you in my prayers for a full and speedy recovery!!!

All the best,
