10X12 SEF coil

Rick(ND)

Well-known member
I got a new 12X10 SEF coil coming from Kellyco and hope it will be as good as some say it is. I see many are using them and haven't really heard anything bad about them and cant find a used one for sale, so they must be good or something, so I just have to try one myself and see how they will do for me. Wont be able to try it for a while as we still have snow and frozen ground around here and figure it will be at lest 2 or 3 Weeks before we can dig in the ground.
I had a 15X12 for my E-Trac when I had it as I wanted the 12X10, but push the wrong button and got the bigger coil and I was impressed with it and only used it a few times, but it was good, so I hope the 12X10 for the Sovereign will be as impressive.

Rick, I bought both the 10x12 SEF and 12x15 SEF coils at the same time. Made a BIG mistake, used the 10x12 first and like it so much ( wet/dry sand ) that I can't bring myself to take it off to even try the 12x15.

Rick,I'm another curious buyer,I hope to get out for a search soon, might go to a park and look for some dry areas.Been nervous about the weather, backhoe will be here Monday morning to dig a grave for two of our horses and a vet for the grim job later that day. HH Ron

The left to right target separation is awesome. Do the sovereign wiggle and the target is at the curve in the coil tip or heel .
I have also found at the beach it picks up micro sized targets better than the stock coils. The hype is real.
Just wait til critter chimes in.

Sorry about the horse's Ron. That stinks.
Our neighbor has some that are always around our yard. Me and the wife say hi to them everyday.

Jason, anxious to hear Ron and Rick's opinions on this fantastic coil after they've got some field time with it, just like I've enjoyed reading several people's field reports in the last month or two who seem to have all expressed positive opinions of the 12x10.

Ron, sorry to hear about the horses. Don't think I could handle that. Not without several stiff shots to get done what needs done. Funny how I've shot plenty of deer with a crossbow and gutted them without issues, but I don't think I could be in the same room with a pet while they give it the needle. Not sure but I think that makes me some kind of hypocrite...

J,not easy but both of the horses Trooper and Sport have lived good long lives. There are a lot of horse people who know these horses that are going to be upset. The lady I got Sport from was going to put him down five years ago,she was a boarder my wife and I decided to find Sport a barn but unable and kept him he was our alpha horse and took care of the herd 17 hands race horse.Trooper our first horse is just too old and not well this horse has taught a lot of pros how to ride, including my wife an myself our farm is even named after him Barnanza Farm LLC (Trooper Barnanza). We decided to get out of the boarding business but still have two horses left Jake my quarter horse and Patriot a warm blood which I helped delivery.Pam and I are getting too old for the work and now we are getting beat up with high feed bills and taxes.sorry for rambling. Thanks Ron

Did you ask for the "findmall special" or just free shipping?

Yes I did.. I just sent them an email telling them of my displeasure.

By the time I got a live person on the phone after 3 tries I was not a happy camper and let her know (hey can I buy something?) maybe when I mentioned findmall and me being somewhat miffed she thought what the hell give em free shipping?
Hope they do the right thing for you!

Ok ok, I think this is the straw that broke.... ...how much is Kelly Co asking for them?!? I may have to make a phone call tomorrow!! And who is the best person to talk with? I just bought the ult 13, but summer is coming, so I figure I can recoup the cost in finds!

$179.99 includes coil and free shipping, at least for me, Andrea took my order.
Good luck and HH

Ask for JW. He seems to know things (like what is in stock despite the computer maybe saying they are out) when others don't.

So sounds like the Findmall special might still be at play here for free shipping on Detech coils? Might have been due to your long wait on the phone because I thought they said a few weeks back they no longer have that long standing free shipping special going on like they always did. Might just be they don't do that for these BBS 12x10 coils anymore since they are on a probation basis to see how they still sell after the GT got canned..

By the way, if anybody calls and orders one PLEASE ask how many they have left in stock. As of like 3 or so weeks ago this latest new batch was at 16 left, then a few days later somebody said they had 14 left. Wondering how fast they are selling. The first batch must have sold quick enough after the GT got canceled because they said they'd continue to order more so long as they sold fast enough. If this second batch goes quick then I'd expect another batch ordered. If anybody finds out how many are left, ask JW if they are selling fast enough and they'll order a third batch here. Just curious. Otherwise they said we'd have to get groups of ten together to pre-order any future coils for the GT/Excal.

$180 , sounds good, in the UK they would cost equivalent of $ 230, now question is, how reliable are they ? What I mean is I'm going to Kellyco in 2 weeks, but obviously I'd have no warranty once back in the UK....any thoughts ?

Just checked my credit card and was charged $191 so even though I mentioned the Findmall Special I got charged shipping as the price I was quoted was $179.
I was also told they would get it sent out in a day and I would get a notice when it would be shipped FedEx, but haven't seen a notice yet, so maybe even though they told me they had 2 in stock when I called they maybe out, just have to wait and see and really hope to see it within a week.

I just ordered one less than five minutes ago. They are sold out, but have a shipment of 10 more coming in within a week or so, so mine will come out of that future order.

OBX...Cool! Thanks for reporting that. That second batch sold in under a month then here if memory serves of when they got it in. It was at least 16 coils if not more at that time. Probably ordered 20 I would suspect at that time then. 10 this time? Maybe Detech is running out of production stock for the spring rush, as those coils are sold through numerous outlets in the UK I think by the looks of it and not just at one source from what I've seen when snooping UK sites. Might be Kellyco could only get 10 more without waiting with Detech filling other orders perhaps?

Rick, by the sound of it you got your order in with the last 2 left and one is yours, as OBX's post is 3 hours after yours.

Hydraglide, I've heard almost ZERO about bad SEFs for the FBS and BBS Minelab machines. A few other brands of detectors (two different companies come to mind) seems people have issues with them more often than not, but at least one of those brands seems rather picky about coils, and not just *aftermarket* coils in having issues with them.

So I wouldn't worry too much about getting a dud for a FBS or BBS unit. I can probably think of only 1 or 2 maybe posts in various forums across the net I've ever ran across where an FBS or BBS guy reporting have problems with an SEF since day 1 of the SEFs introduction, and believe me I do a lot of web snooping reading up on coils for various machines.

From OBX's report sounds like that 3rd shipment since the GT was discontinued might be in within that 10 days you are showing up there.

If anybody is thinking of getting a 12x10, from the numerous field reports from people over the last month or two as new owners, so far it's all been pretty much real positive and supports my feelings for this fantastic coil, so if you've been on the fence and needed more input then you've got it now. If Rick reports some positive stuff on it to back up Ron's first hunt report with it then it's pretty much a grand slam, as both of them have owned Sovereigns and various coils for a lot of years.

Better jump on one of these coils in case down the road Kellyco stops importing them, because they are the only US outlet for them. I've said it before but if mine went bad on me and I couldn't fix it, I'd swim over seas to get another one if I had too... They are THAT GOOD...

And yea, once again...No, I don't have any money behind these coils. Just feel they are like strapping a 4 barrel carburetor onto the Sovereign and will wake up some dead sites for people in so many ways, including depth, left/right separation (unmasking), and stability around minerals or EMI. I just think the Sovereign is one fantastic detector in so many unique ways (the long rich detailed audio and supreme depth being just two of them), and so want to see people strap one of these 12x10 SEFs on and push VLF to the last little bit of edge it has to offer IMO. Get one and you'll think Minelab just handed you the Sovereign GTX. "X" being for Extreme...

No guarantees though of course. Every body's soils or sands are different and might for some odd reason rub these coils the wrong way, but with their excellent reputation of being rock solid stable in bad grounds I doubt there is much risk of that...

Dug these posts up from Wpruden on the 12x10 on his Sovereign XS. Thought people would like to read his thoughts...

I just came in from the field and I will say that the pinpointing is very good, more so than I expected!

Oh one thing I did I had a weak battery in my detector, so that was the issue with my threshold quick change of batteries and all settled out! MY FAULT for rushing to the test garden.

This 12x10 ROCKS!!!!

A larger coil, that is more stable than my 8"bbs non slimline version. sharpe separation and last but not least deeper by size and higher sensitivity settings! You can't beat that! Trust me I've read post where other did not care for this coil but I've found plenty of deep coins in the woods with that coil the deepest being 11" and many coins in the 8" range.

The coil sounds are very rich as I was out again today only in the field listening to clarity of all targets.SUPER TONES! CRYSTAL CLEAR!

It should be a SUPER SPRING.

Even the explorer guys say its super. Over 90% of the explorer guys say its better than the 11" Pro coil. That its deeper and like I said has better clarity on tones, super clear!

This sef coil enhances the detectors like nothing ever seen before.

I may have to get that 6x8 coil and quick.

As far as I'm concerned DDs are a thing of the PAST! sorry but that is my opinion.
These coils are super, ITS LIKE HAVING A DETECTOR STEROIDS, only its legal and heatly!!!

Heck, I wonder how they are working on the single frequency units.
I think detecting has just been revolutionized, it is what it is!

Go back in some earlier post on the sef coils as well as European detecting sites, Heck just go to the SEF manufacturer web site and they explain performance and what it was designed to do.
MY 12x10 sef on my sovereign xs works as stated! clean, crisp, sharp signals at greater depth with higher sensitivity settings if you desire.
However I discovered another performance it excel at finding shallow coins on edge 1"- 3" in depth. I went to simple areas to learn other detectors like minelab advantage & whites xl pro these machine missed what seemed like a ton of clad coins in a local park that I pounded heavily with those other machines and I knew them well!
Its just said that they don't make an 8x6 coil like they have for the FBS machines.

SEF coils are the real deal make no mistake about it!

I finaly made it out this weekend with my new sef coil 10x12. It was only my second time out with it and I have owned it for 5 months! Yes I have been busy.
Let me say this: I went to a local park that I use to learn my detectors. Since I did not want to dig anything deep in this particular park I hunted in silent mode. Targets were everywhere. So I went to max disc. I covered a few areas that I had been over with my sovereign before only with the 8"bbs coil, minelab advantage 8" & 10" coils, garrett ace 250, whites xl pro and tesoro silver umax.
I dug 2 quarters, 10 dimes, 5 lincolns and a nickle and skipped all the zincs pennies, all clad in over 1 hour. Here is the catch all coins were in the 1-3 inch range!!!! all on edge!!! I know for a fact I passed over these with my other detectors that MISSED such shallow targets! Even the the sovereign with the 8" coil missed. The coins I found have been in the ground for some time!
This sef coil is incredible! I can't wait to go back to my old sites! This coil should be called the COIN EDGE BUSTER COIL!
The signals are very clear as well! This coil does what they say it does!
I will use this coil in 2 ways
1. shallow targets in silent search.
2. deep targets with threshold and zero disc.
3. AM pinpointing is super on this coil.
