It's a rainy day in Bermuda today so I slipped over to Mangrove Bay in the gray and the drizzle for a quick hunt. I've stripped this beach pretty good, because it is so handy, I've hunted it a lot. Huge volumes of junk in the lane so I still haven't hunted that completely but the mine is virtually empty now and I try to strip out a little of the trash in the lane each hunt so that eventually I will get to the good stuff.
I hadn't been in the water 15 minutes before I heard someone yelling to me from on shore, it was an older local man. I took off my headphones and he asked me if my Excal would work on land, "of course" I responded. "Don't go away, my friend will be right here, his momma lost some valuable jewellery and he needs you to look for it" he replied. I went back to hunting and after an hour I'd only managed 95 cents in clad, a few worn out British coins and a small men's 10k signet ring, a ring is a ring they say so it was all good. As I was exiting the water an SUV pulled up and a guy about my age jumped out, walked over and introduced himself, James. I asked him what he had lost and he looked at me strangely then asked how I liked my Excaliber "1000 or 800 he asked?" Obviously, I had the wrong guy as this guy was obviously a hunter. It turns out that James has been hunting the waters of Bermuda for the last 15 years, has an Excal 800 and dives with Teddy Tucker the famous Bermuda treasurehunter. Teddy got into treasure diving after WWII where he served as an underwater demolitions expert, he was hunting long before Mel Fisher came on the scene and dove with Jacque Cousteau. If the topic has anything to do with underwater treasure, Teddy knows about it as he helped write the handbook. James would like to go hunting with me sometime soon and we swapped phone #s with the idea that we would get together for a hunt, I guess it's time for me to get dive certified.
The fellow who wants me to find his momma's jewellery never showed up but I gave my number to his friend who called to me from the shore so I'll probably be hunting for that soon, it''ll be dirtfishing so I'll have to dust off my ACE250 for that one.
A good day, some good contacts and a bunch of fun for a rainy afternoon.
Cheers,
BDA
