After receiving a pm about where the ring discriminated out I thought I would post what I've learned.
I remember having my alt discrimination set to just pop or crackle on a nickel on the ground. I do remember when I found the target I switched to the alt discrimination and got a very good repeatable beep, so I new with some confidence that the target was not a newly dropped nickel (now I have noticed in the past if the nickel has been in the ground for a long time it will give a very good repeatable beep even if the alt discrimination is set this way). I was very pleased finding that kind of ring in a school yard.
Now this weekend I did some air test with the ring and to my surprise it goes silent just a little above the foil mark (which is well below where I had it set on that day) on my tejon. Now that goes to show that even gold reacts in some way to the surrounding ground when buried for a while. Now I would imagine that a very small, thin gold ring might just discriminate out some where before the foil mark on my machine. My final thought are, "I've got to start digging some of the fainter, softer signals that disappear before the foil range.:detecting:

Yup!

As much as I try to avoid it, there is no better option than dig 'em all!
