10 years with my Sovereign GT. Should I upgrade?

JASONSPAZ1

Every year I struggle with a dilemma. Should I keep my GT or sell it?
I worry about it ever breaking down ( even though I baby it ) and then left in the cold since it is discontinued and the cost of repairs ( I have heard ) are sky high on a GT.
Anyone secure in moving forward into 2016 with their GT without the concerns I have?
I love my GT and I have EVERY accessory needed with it. A big investment over 10 years. I know I can still get a good sell price on a GT that can still keep me in the high end machine game.
It is just that Minelab seems to not care that the discontinued the most UNIVERSAL detector ever.

Thanks
Jason

In my book the only upgrade is the CTX. I use my Sovereign at the beach and I like it better than the CTX. The CTX is waterproof and I sure wish the Sovereign was, but I use mine to knee deep water and I love it. Until Minelab comes out with a waterproof Sovereign my regular Sovereign will have to do. If it breaks I'll have to watch the forums for another one.

I have not had my GT quite four years yet. But once I started to learn the language of that machine I fell in love with it. I did get an X-Cal for the beach as I was terrified of getting my GT wet.

I look at all the Ad's and claims of how far superior other machines may be but my GT keeps me in the game. Get rid of my GT??? I Dont Think So.

I have had mine for about ten years. When it goes Iwill selthe parts. I will never buy another Mine lab as I feal
Betrayed that it was discontinued. I used it yesterday on the beach and love it. I bought a Tesoro Vaq last year that is only good on dry sand. I'm 68 and hope my sovereign last for a long as I can detect. I met a man on the beach yesterday using an Excalibur. He said that be bought a Sov Gt that was one slightly used for $ 250.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. .. do what ya gotta do jason... i know your gt has served you well as i remember seeing many of your cool finds posted here... i imagine a ctx would be a step up but for the money you gotta pay for one it better be.. takes alot of zinc pennies to pay off one those units. lol. I dont use my gt as much as i use to but for farm field hunting i would be lost without one... good luck which ever way you go...

I was just looking at my old posts and no doubt the Sovereign GT has served me well.
I just wish Minelab ( or anyone ) would manufacture a multi frequency waterproof AT PRO, or the upcoming White's MX Sport type machine at the upper middle high end range like the GT was supposed to be.
Let it be the spiritual successor of the Sovereign line with the added waterproof housing.
The Sovereign series is now a legend and I got mine new for 679.99 10 years ago.
Sadly I think something happened at Minelab when the company Codan ( I think ) took over.
It seems they are focused on either the high end CTX or low end Go-Find
They forgot about the analog guys and finding a way to lure them to digital with a kind of VFLEX tech.
I just can not believe Minelab has not carried over the BBS tech and merged it with VFlex tech and offer us Sovereign guys something new.
I just hate the insecure feeling that if I need a repair I am screwed because parts may no longer exist and a super high repair price will be end of my GT.
It will be a sad day. So I try to convince myself to let it go and get something new so the loss of an eventual broken GT wont be crushing.
Problem is nothing in the price range or beyond offers the raw performance without the bells and whistles of a SOV GT.

There are plenty of older Sovereigns available out there. I do have an Excalibur or what someone called a waterproof Sovereign, but I don't get the joy out of it like I do the Sovereign. Manufacturers especially Minelab have ignored the call from us for years. Single frequency waterproof units just plain don't measure up on the salty beaches. I'll run mine till it dies and then worry about it.

Jason, there are still Sovereigns out there, but with no mods and clean these Sovereigns are getting hard to find.Your Sovereign with the accessories will have a good resale price and should help a lot with your upgrade. My problem in the past was every time I got rid of my Sovereign I ended up buying another one at a higher price. These are decisions we all make after a while.Sometimes instead of being burn out on a detector it can be our hunting sites that dried out and time to move to another park or location. Good Luck Ron

Been there. I sold some because I had them as backups and never used them. I sold some to friends because theirs went down. I sold quite a few to pay for other units. Every time I was without a Sovereign I regretted it. My buddy has a saying "Stupidity should cost you". Let's just say I spent quite a bit through the years especially buying my favorite coils multiple times.

I started with a Sovereign XS 2A Pro, that I got from Kellyco.
It was an upgraded XS with an ability to run it in single tone ( which I never did).
I only bought that XS2A due to being frustrated with a White's XLT, Fisher CZ 6 and CZ 7, as well as the Garrett CX3, and the Tesoro Bandito Umax.
I went through all those machines until I threw my hands in the air and gave the Aussie machine a try.
Ever since that XS2A Sovereign, I have owned and primarily used a Sovereign.
I trade my first GT for an Explorer SE, I hated that SE and after a month I went back to a GT.
And here we are now with what my gut tells me is no more BBS after the Excalibur.

Out of curiosity. Has anyone ever e-mailed Minelab and asked them what the status of the BBS platform is and if they will revisit it.

It is my opinion that sales for the CTX were slow until they
discontinued the SOV. Has there been any other models
that they no longer support. I have a lot of money tied up in
my machine. They still sell and service the Ecalaber because
It cost more.

Over all the Sovereigns are a tough detector as most of us see, many made back in the early 90s are still working as good as new other than some small problems with the ISO rods where the coil connects will come loose. There were also little problems on the original and the XS with the plug in battery connections as some pulled on the wire instead of the plug when disconnecting battery to be charged, On the XS2 and the XS2a they used a different set up so it was a drop in pack, but the pressure on the battery door from the spring connection would sometimes push the door open. Speaking of battery doors for the XS Series if anyone reading this has a extra battery door for the original, the XS, XS2 or XS2a I could use one myself as I need one for one I have here.
The Sovereign when most people first start using one wonder if they made a big mistake as it looks not as well built like others, but as we see they are made to last. Most hate this detector and some sell them right away, but those that kept them and learned them well and knows what this detector will do and not only get very impressed, but others they detect with also get impressed. I feel it is the best detector I have used in my 42 years of detecting from what it can tell me about whats in the ground and can see items next to trash as I seen many times, also some of my deepest coins found have been with the Sovereign and knew they were coins before I dug them from experience with the tones and meter reading as how they were acting.
I too wish they would not have discontinued them, but think most switched to the Explorers so they sales for the Sovereigns went down enough so Minelab to quite making them. The problem with some of the part were there was so many different ones as many of these different model Sovereigns used different parts inside as they were always trying to improve what they had even though they looked the same. With many other brands they used the same parts, but made them look different, so they could stock the part as so many were interchangeable for the different models.
Now as I see it I have had a Sovereign since 1996 and still have a GT and a XS2a and maybe selling my XS2a as I have complete confidence in my GT. I have tried others from the Explorers , E-Trac to the 3030 and still have my GT and always plan on having one as long as I can detect as I know what it can do. If your GT is working OK and done well for you I would keep it, as where are you going to find a detector that works as good as the Sovereign. Maybe pick up a different detector to use, but keep the Sovereign as many have found out as they sold theirs only to buy one back again.

Good Luck

Rick

They have got a waterproof sovereign.......its the excalibur. Both machines use basically the same circuitry and there is no difference performance wise.

To answer your question...... they no longer support some of the earlier Explores, which by the way they discontinued at the same time they did the Sov. Thats another GREAT machine that going to be missed so they could sell more CTXs. I like a Sov, but even if you box one i still prefer the uniqueness of the Xcal in the water. There is a difference in depth between PP and disc on the Xcal, that i dont quiet get on the Sov. The tones to me are much easier to distinguish on the Xcal as well in disc...... even after playing with them in the box. Right now they couldnt do away with the Xcal...... its the only DIVE machine they have and id dare say the highest selling water machine on the market. Their only option was to keep it as is with BBS or redue it with FBS. I think they wanted to get the CTX off the ground first. Ill be surprised if we dont see a change to it....... swap it to FBS and once again be the only show in town for parts and service......and raise the price to near $2000. They already did away with the 8".

Excal is still a big seller, there are no plans by Minelab to discontinue it so BBS will continue...... Minelab stopped selling the Sovereign GT due to poor sales of it the last few years, sales dropped to a point it was no longer supporting itself. Minelab should support the Sov GT to at least 2020 due to their still being a few new ones sold...They will still be repaired long after that.....

It has nothing to do with the cost, Sovereign line was dropped due to poor sales for several years, the excal is still a big seller....
