10"x14" PROformance Power DD coil

I just returned from a week coin shooting at the beach. I used used my 10"x14" PROformance Power DD coil. It is everything it has been advertised to be; however I DO NOT like the closed cover I bought with the coil, now my question.
Could you protect the coil by wrapping it with duct tape instead of the cover? The closed coil cover allowed sand to build up and make the cover even heavier. I have also gotten use to an open coil and like to see the ground beneath the coil. Thank you in advance for your help.

This coil is built like a tank and unless you use it for a hammer the cover isn't needed.

I suppose it is a trade off; if it is tough it will be a little heavy.
