10" X 5" Elip coil question

Piero franchi

New member
Hi, I am hoping some on has first hand experiance with the new 10 X 5 and the 10.5 round DD coils, both at 18.8hz

I have the 10.5 DD and am considering buying the elip.

One thing I would like to know is, as the DD coils give an Eliptical footprint anyway, why build an elip coil at all!!!!!!!

Quick reply needed as I want to order one to arrive before the weekend.

many thanks

which helps enormously when detecting in places that could snag a concentric or other open coils. The 18.75 kHz Elip coil is one of my favourite coils because its nice and light, easy to swing and HOT on small gold. If your into prospecting or like going after small pieces of jewelry I would choose the elip coil as a must have in your arsenal of coils. Every coil has its place on the 70 and if Minelab bring out a 12" or 14" DD coil for the X-Terra 70 it would make it a complete unit in my opinion.
Cheers!

The 10 X 5 DD elliptical coil gives the same footprint as all the other DD coils. In other words, you are detecting in a straight line in the middle of the coil (like a skinny rectangle). The advantage of this coil over the 10.5 round DD is that you get better target separation which may help you snag those missed items in trashy areas. I only use either the 10 X 5 or the 10.5 DD on my XT70 exclusively as I prefer the DD coils over the concentric. I like the new technology of coils.

If all DD coils have the same footprint, what is the differance between a 10.5 DD round and a 10 x 5 Eliptical?????

Each has the same (nearly) 10" lenght

The eliptical coil has a much more sensitive front and back end. Front 1/3 and back 1/3 of the coil surface. This is greatly noticed when compared to the round coil. The elipticals real depth area is in the middle third, all this reference to areas by fractions is just roughly, not precisely. Meaning that for real total depth coverage using the eliptical you will or want to overlap your sweeps by about a third of your sweep, using the middle part ,sort of, you know what I mean. Also if hunting real small gold you will want to do the same using the sensitive front end to get the best out of its sensitivity on small shallow gold. The round coil is just a bit less of a solid hit on small gold than the eliptical coil has and its real value is for depth on larger targets. Some small targets close to the round coil give quite a strange weak response at times. The round can also be a pain when there is a lot of branch and twigs litter about which causes you to get caught up in them. I much prefer solid coils anyday. If I was to make a call on them for getting just 1 coil then it would be the 10x5 every time for its enhanced sensitivity, manouverability, and solid design. I do have the round and like it but the eliptical is my favourite. One more thing too. The larger round coil can pick up more interference when it is present with the 10x5 running much more stable in those enviroments. For example the round may need to be wound back to 15 to 20 on the sens scale whereas the 10x5 may still happily cruise along on a much higher setting of 25 to 30. I have had this happen on a few occasions.

Thanks BT.
You cant belive how many people I have asked this question to, and they just dont know!!!!!!!!

One thing I should have said, Is I detect in england UK, and mostley on farm land.

I have 4 coils for my X-Terra70..

The stock one 7.5 kHZ and a Double D 10.5" also the new 6" and Elliptical 18.75kHz.

My general detecting favourite is the Elliptical the machine is well balanced with it and It will nose in small places while having a fair ground coverage.

I have found items from a 3" Cannon shot at 14-16" to small hammerd silver coins using this combination.

The 6" is very good but the Elliptical gives more ground coverage with its shape.Jerry.
