10" versus 8" round coils for F4

Boston Metal

New member
I have a 4" coil and an 11" DD I am going to add either the 10 or 8 inch round. My reason for adding the coil is to be able to better identify screw caps. I almost always use the 11" DD, but when I'm in a site with a ton of rusty deep screw-caps I end up digging them. With the DD coil they can't be distinguished from larger high conductors (they usually come in just above quarters, but that range also includes 50 and dollar coins as well as quarter spills).

I assume the 10 is a better choice since depth and coverage are both important to me. Does anyone think the 8 offers any advantage over the 10? Is it true that I will do better on screw-caps with a round vs DD?

While they (crown caps) will ID in the coin range if they have been in the ground a while, and are a bit rusty....the audio sounds different. Do you use good headphones? It important to use quality phones the be able to hear the nuances that you NEED to hear. Rusty crown caps are harsher sounding...........and just sound rough for some reason. This goes for most all the F series fishers. Coins in the same range will sound a lot mellower. Try to pay real good attention to every signal you dig (audio wise) before you dig it.
I have horrible hearing...but use phones that have good high range response.......so end up hearing the target very well.
Concentrics tend to discriminate better than DD's overall......but you can still tell a crown cap a good percentage of the time with a DD with practice.................
I tend to dig everything in the spots I hunt....mostly because there are sooooo many variables............and ground conditions.................masking and co-located targets......WILL affect the signal from your targets.......a LOT. Besides......who's to say that there isn't a sweet seated dime BELOW that rusty crown cap that you don't want to dig?

Thanks for the info. I use ok headphones, but not top of the line. Regarding the difference between the rusty crowns and the coins, I have noticed a difference and I usually know when I'm digging one, but I still dig them for the reasons you gave. I am hopeful that the 10Inch coil will give me the peace of mind to leave some of them in the ground in really infested areas. I have some very old parks around me, but kids have been drinking in them for almost 100 years.......
