10" Tornado/Slimline or 10x12" SEF?

I recently purchased an Excalibur with a hardwired WOT coil. While I really like the coverage of the WOT, it's a bit too large for some freshwater areas I hunt as the trash levels are fairly high. My plan is to add a Buchaneer waterproof plug and run the WOT when possible, and a smaller coil when necessary.

Does anyone have any experience running both the 10x12 SEF and the 10" Tornado/Slimline coil on the Excal? Which would be the better choice for shallow water wading? I will be doing some saltwater hunting with it, but mostly freshwater from wet sand to neck deep.

Performance wise I like the 10X12 better but Ive found out the SEF coils are harder to swing in the water than the round coils. Im guessing its the profile the coil presents in the water. The coil on my AT pro as well is similiar to an SEF and even though thin it takes more effort to swing it then a similiar sized round coil, in the water.

The 15x12 was too much drag in the water for me I like the 12x10 better than the stock 10" Tornado on land but haven't used the 12x10 in the water to see if it's too much drag for me. If it is, I would look into an S-12 for water hunting. The 12x10 is my go to land coil, though.

Thanks for the link and the suggestions!

I had never considered taking advantage of the v shape in the back of the SEF coils for pinpointing purposes, but that alone makes me lean towards the SEF. I have a bit of trouble with deep water recoveries when the water is cloudy as the lake bottoms here are hard, and you have to be spot on with the scoop. Using the back of the coil to place the scoop (Or my foot) would probably help with those times when I am unable to see the coil.

Yep, stick your big toe right into the V at the base of the coil once you've wiggled forward and just lost the signal. I then back up until I just start picking up the signal again, then stick my toe in there, then use my foot as a guide for the scoop at an angle towards the tip of my foot. That's for water hunting. On land I use the tip of the coil to pinpoint and it's then at the base of that "V" up front.

One word of warning for land hunting....I've found some really deep coins won't show up using the tip of the coil to try to PP. They'll only sound off further into the middle of the coil. That's at the extreme fringes of depth, though.
