10" target retreival?

Whats the best way?

When we first started detecting last december we used a shovel.. a full sized garden shovel.....
Then we got a "Garden buddy" and some 48" short full sized shovels...
The shovel thing worked well till it got dry after we learned to not make shallow plugs.
It rains here tons, except for this time of year.

We learned this is not the way to go regardless of the season or rain fall.

We now have been able to afford pin-pointers, you know the ones.... and have become more skilled.

We have some 8" screwdrivers and pin pointers but it took me 10 minutes at least to pry out a 7" deep kennedy half.

Truly we have done some damage to the ground in the past, even had cops called on us.
Not nearly as bad as I have seen round here lately though.

Anyway we are down to screwdrivers and PP's, but how to retrieve the deep targets?

We are done with shovels, and being seen with shovels.

I liked your post alot. In the last couple of years I have seen many local people enter the hobby and most are not an asset to the hobby. As an experienced detectorist, I know that a small bladed shovel is capable of neat digging in the public places I hunt, but to the caretakers all they see is a shovel. One guy I have encountered told me he has been kicked out of three places with his shovel. I have hunted these places many times and have never been asked to leave. I have a handfull of scenic spots that I have been hunting for years and still pulling out some old coins, but when and if these spots ever get posted, I will quit the hobby. Remember this, we have an image to protect and everybody swinging a detector is responsible for this image. Even if you never plan to hunt certain places again, remember there are people who will. The Predator Raptor is all I use if I can't "pop" the target. I like it a lot more than the knife.

I like that Predator Raptor. a bit pricey ....
Is it hard to push the blade straight down with that lift angle on the handle?

It is not hard at all. Once you use one you won't use the knife. Yes it's pricy but will last a lifetime. I removed the paint and sharpened it razor sharp. Then I waxed the blade. I can cut a plug in 1/2 the time of the knife.

All of you may think that I am nuts, but consider this idea. At Lowes you can purchase a small auger that is used to plant grass plugs, flowers and the like. I use one of these augers in conjunction with the small stainless steel Garrett digging trowell. I use a small Dewalt 3/8" cordless drill. I can dig a 10" deep hole 3" in diameter in about 10 seconds. The auger is dull and does not damage your finds. Take your headphones before you run that drill because there will be a noise in them....
