10" round DD vs Elliptical Coil

John (OH)

New member
Can anyone who uses both shed some light on preference for one vs. the other? I mainly hunt for coins. Thanks. John

Just watched the DVD on the X-Terras last night for something to do and they said right there that the 7.5kHz coil is best for coin hunting and the 18.7kHz for smaller shallower objects.
Just passing on what I watched.

What you see on T.V and what you experience are two totaly different things bob....as you know not everything is as it seems. My main input to the coil topic is the variation in soil.....there is so much to take into consideration when comparing coils/khz/depth/sensitivity ect ect and so much of that has to do with what part of the world you are in and what temp/climate/moisture ect ect. What one person may experience with a certain coil could be totaly different to another using the same coil on the opposite side of the world. Again take into account battery strength...it may read full power on the ID display but is it?
Cheers!

for coin hunting in my moderately mineralized soil, I prefer my stock 9-inch concentric coil at 7.5 kHz OR the 9 inch concentric at 3 kHz. As I have mentioned in several previous posts, the 18.75 seems to be more sensitive. But I find that I have to lower the sensitivity on my X-Terra to keep it stable. And that, to me, seems to offset any gain by using the 18.75. Currently, if I am hunting a wide open area with old iron trash, I use the 3 kHz and hunt in all metal mode. I believe the audio provided by the 3 kHz helps me to separate out the deep iron better. If I am in a yard or park, I switch to the 7.5 kHz and hunt in a notch discrimination configuration. With that said, I do like the elliptical coils on some of my other detectors. But again, I haven't been a big fan of any of the 18.75 kHz coils with my X-Terra. On the same token, I am not a big fan of the weight distribution of the 10.5 DD coil either. That is not to say it is awkward for most. But I deal with some physical disabilities. With all that in consideration, if and when Minelab comes out with an elliptical DD coil at 7.5 Khz or 3 kHz, I would buy one in a heart beat. Right after I bought the smaller 6-inch DD at 7.5 kHz. overall it is designed for smaller shallower targets.
I was quoting what I had seen on a DVD. My use of the 10" DD has more weight than a DVD.
