10 inch magnum coil

I have a BH Challenger that came with a 6" concentric coil, it's great for coin shooting and separating targets, but I'm hoping to get more depth out of my detector. I was wondering if anyone has upgraded to a larger coil and gotten increased depth on air tests? I have heard from some people that it will give me increased depth switching to the 10" magnum coil, and others have said that it will only give me an wider field of detection and no added depth. Thought I'd ask to see if anyone has gotten better results from an upgrade before I bought a larger coil. Thanks for any help you can give. Oh, here are some of my favorite finds with it so far....

Nice finds! Yes, I believe you will see quite a difference in depth between a 6" concentric and 10" concentric coil. I've got 4" and 8" coils for my Bounty Hunter and sizes 5" to 12" for my other detectors. Sometimes you want more coverage and sometimes you need something smaller like in trashy or tight areas. I hope this opinion helps. HH. Matt

On all metal mode it will give you much more depth. On any discrimination depth will be at worst an inch more, at best 3 to 4, depending on your type of soil. I have all three coils and about the only time I use the 10 incher is in areas without lots of trash. It is real easy to get confused by the multiple signals that the larger coil will pick up because of the bigger area it covers. You will also have to watch your sensitivity setting as it affects the larger coil more than the smaller one. It gets more interference from power lines and such. Do not underestimate the power of the 4 inch coil. It is what I prefer to hunt with in parks because of the abundance of trash. In all metal mode it will p/u coins down to 8 inches but will only pin point/discriminate them to 5 1/2 inches, maybe six on a good day, providing they have been in the ground for a while. In my coin garden I was not able to accurately identify coins buried at 8 inches with my 10 inch coil, but it did tell me they were there. In all metal mode I could hold the coil 6 inches off the ground and pick up the coins. So it is a toss up between more somewhat more depth, and a new learning curve because the bigger coil really doesn't act like the one that came with your detector. I will say this, I was a little disappointed in the 10 inch coil as reality was different from what I had convinced myself it would be. Not the coils fault. My post is based on how my 505 responds to the coils, yours may be different. Good luck and happy hunting.

Great, thanks for the help! I just ordered one. I am planning to use it in less trashy areas while relic hunting. The six inch coil isn't getting deep enough for me to pull out my first three-ringer, hope this does the trick. Bounty Hunter doesn't make a DD coil do they? I haven't found one, so I'm guessing not. My BH is a Challenger, I think they are only sold at Bass Pro, pretty similar to the Tracker IV, I think. Pretty inexpensive but it has done me well.

Teknetics has a DD coil that will fit but I did enough research to convince my self that on the 505 the cost/benefit ratio was not worth it. If you are gonna use the 10 inch coil in all metal mode for relic hunting you will love it. Hope you like digging... HH!

Yeah, the Tracker IV is a good inexpensive detector that gets the job done.
Best of luck with the 10" coil. Be sure to let us know the good finds you come
up with. Good hunting to you !

I meant to say Fisher has the DD coil, not Teknetics.

I have been tracking my package, it just got into town today, should have it by tomorrow. Can't wait to test it out. Will let you know how it performs compared to the 6".

 Argh, absolutely no increase in depth at all. It was just like some had told me, only an increase in the width of the field of detection, which I kinda like, but it will also make it harder to pinpoint. Haven't decided yet whether or not I am going to keep it. Was so excited to get it and test it, too bad.
