10"Eliptical ws coil

Thought I would run this by again and see if anyone has any more input on it. I have some input now that I have used my 10" Ews on my Tejon a couple of times and believe I am going to like it just fine. I did find another War of 1812 Period (Eagle with shield this time) about 20' from where I found another 1812 period(slick) button in a patch of dirt that I, and some others have continually pounded now off and on for the last year. The 10" did exactly what I got it for and I would just have to admit that I was a bit surprized at finding the latest button, in that it was not very deep, maybe 5" and with my alt disc. a little above 5, the button literally screamed at me.I did have a little problen with pinpointing it but that will be up to me to figure out and of course no fault of the coil. If it is awhile before I find another goodie with that coil, that find has to tell me it "done good" on that one! More swinging will tell me more, but for now it is looking like a real winner, and I thought I should say so. A couple of y'all have already bragged some on the 10"Ews and any more input will be a big help to us all. Thanks, and HH, Charlie

It may be the better coverage or the fact that it will go deeper than the concentric in the mineralized soil (if that's what you are faced with), maybe both. I believe there's a 12x10ws that will go much deeper and cover more area in a sweep. Might find it of good use.

Ism, my dirt is pretty much neutral/mild for the most part where I could use the 12 X 10 walking the woods and fields looking for hot spots but at present I am working an 1811 home site heavily loaded in iron debre and nails that can't help but be mineralized some from all the iron rust etc.Little to no modern trash. That's mainly why I choose to try the 10" X 5Ws.I did try and study up all I could on it but there sure doesn't appear to be many using it just yet that are saying a lot about it. Those that have, say mostly that they like it a lot , though it does not go as deep as the concentric but deep enough for them. That is pretty much the way it is going with me and the 10 X 5., and I will add that it does go plenty deep enough for me in wherever I have used it, even in the cleaner spots I have walked. Fact is I have made some really deep digs with the 9X8 and 5.75 Con. and believe the 10X5 ,though maybe not as deep, is just a little better at coverage with the narrow/wide footprint and may be cutting through the irony dirt a little better.Don't really expect to get a lot of depth out of any coil in the really irony concentrations and so far the 10X5 is proving to be catching some slack left by the 9X8 and 5.75 Con. Could surmise all manner of reasoning but it sure did just what I was hoping it would do for me. All I have to do keep hitting the trashy areas from even more directions and hammering away at it. Those kind of sites are few and far between and every advantage available should be used on it.I will even get around to using every machine I have on it and that will especially include the Compadre and a couple of old 100Khz machines. We havin sum fun on thisun! HH Charlie

Charlie,
I presume you are working the northern states or Canada for 1812 sites (mild soil)?
You are correct in hitting from different directions, its surprising what is missed by one direction of coverage. I have the 10x5ws but use it exclusively for sports fields (shallow objects) as I am into finding gold/silver jewelry right now. But it is a very good coil and can find large relics and coins at a respectable depth. Some people have difficulty pinpointing with WS coils but the 10x5 is spot on if used properly. Its also light and can be threaded into areas that the larger coils can't go. If I can answer any more questions, don't hesitate to ask...Good luck with your finds.
Randy

Thanks for the input Ism. I appreciate hearing from others on their thoughts about the stuff we all use and it helps us get the feel of things new to us. As far as I know our dirt here in (south) Ms.is pretty mild, though I know there is a mineral clay(Kaolin) that does exists in spots hereabouts and I have had what I can only guess is a few times that it had me digging holes to nowhere, but mostly the ground is nothing like some folks have.First couple of hunts on this old site and I pulled out a (holed)1839 Seated Liberty 1/2dime, an extremely rare 1803 Spanish Colonial 1/2 Real, and a slick button from 1812 period. Found them with the 9x8 and 5.5 Con.amongst plenty of nails, so in no way would I slight those coils in the least. They all work great, but sometimes we just do better when we change the game plan some, lol, or we can tell ourselves that to gain more encouragement when the goodies get harder to pull out. Thanks again and HH, Charlie

Nice report and discussion on the coil. I may have to put one on my list of things to get.
