10" DD ?

I have a MXT 300 and hunt 99.9% of the time with the 6X10 DD I am considering the 10" DD due to all the rave reviews. Do you guys and gals feel that this is duplicating the 6X10 or does the 10 DD offer enough differences to justify the purchase? My thinking is to use the 10" DD at the older sites to gain a little more depth. I love the 6X10 but I'm still too new to know if I'm really getting all the benefits out of my MXT with this coil. I sold the 12" that came with the 300 it was just too big for me. Right now my arsenal is the 5.3 eclipse and the 6X10. So again would the 10" DD offer me any advantages?

Thanks for listening and any opinions.

It's deeper and has good sensitivity and trash separation. On elliptical coils they get depth closer to their smaller dimension. So the 6x10 has depth closer to a 6" than a 10" coil. At trashier sites, as long as you have many shallow targets, you're going to experience target masking of deeper objects. At these sites I would use a White

Rob pretty much nailed it, but I'll add a couple of thoughts, if you don't mind.[color]

No, it is not duplication the 6X10. The 6X10 has not been a personal favorite, but that's because I generally am using smaller-than-stock coils because most of the sites I prefer to hunt have a fair amount of trash.

When I do hunt open plowed fields and similar sites, then I might use a standard or larger coil and, when it comes to that, I prefer the 10" DD to the 6X9.

Perhaps, but just because a site is "older" doesn't mean all the good targets are deep. Yes, they can be, but not always, so make sure to qualify the needs at a given site. And if the site is uncluttered with trash, a 10" DD coil, or other large coil, an be of benefit, but unless you remove shallower targets in littered sites, there will be target masking and poor depth performance.

With that comment, I'd suggest holding off until you get a better understanding of the MXT and it's potential with the coils you have. In my opinion, the 5.3 Eclipse is the coil I could mount up and use for 90%

D2 is a great search coil. After using it for awhile I got rid of the Super 12 because I don't like swinging it and the D2 was right there with it on depth. I still like the 6x10 as it offers a little more target separation, but you do give up some depth compared to the D2. For very trashy sites I use the 4x6. If the area is fairly free of trash I use the D2. I use the 6x10 for in between sites and woods hunting. The D2 is like putting the MXT on steroids.

White's Electronics makes the 10" DD D2 and Kellyco makes the 10" DD Excelerator. HH Dennis in Idaho
