10" DD vs. 5.3 Concentric (eclipse)

Hey Everyone!

It's been a long time, I see everyone is doing pretty good with the goodies. I have had my M6 for a year now and am very happy with it. I can't find a single thing to complain about, very rare for me :) .

I am thinking of swapping out the 10" DD for a 5.3. The type of hunting that I do, trashy parks and what not, doesn't seem to be maximised by the DD coil. I did better in trash with the Vaquero and small coil.

Just a few opinions would be appreciated.

So, I am pretty sure that I want to do this and would be looking to trade straight up if I am still convinced in a few days.

Take care and keep your coil on the ground.

Saika, I have a 6" Excelerator and a 6x10 Eclipse. If your into MD'ing for the long haul than my humble advice is to have both coils. My experience has been that if I had only to choose one of those coils, it would be the 6x10. More ground coverage because of size. Great in the open park fields. When working the real trashy areas and unable to change coils I just slow the sweep down. I get acceptable results. If its in your budget you will be set.

I agree with hank1. In the long run the 6x10 is by far the most versital coil as it covers more area than the 5.3 coil and still works fair in trashy areas. I have both the 4.5x7DD and 6" Excelerators coils, but the 6x10 spends most of the time on my MXT. HH Dennis in Idaho

Thanks Guys. Your feedback is appreciated.

I am definitely in for the long haul. I find nothing irritating about this machine, it just does it's job very well.

I just got used to the round style coils over the years. I can't imagine that there is a staggering difference in performance between the two coils. If they are close then I would probably go with the round 5.3.

Anyway, save my clad and buy an additional coil at the end of the summer, the DD is very nice at the beach.

I don't have the 5.3" for my MXT but I do have one on my other detector. Especially since you like round coils I think you would really like the 5.3". Believe me I can't see how you can hunt in trash with either the 9.5 or 10. A DD is better for the beach as you said. If your ground is highly mineralized the 6" like Dennis uses might be better. If your ground is good I'd go with the 5.3". In the trash I don't think you will notice any loss of depth with the 5.3. Believe me any small coil is going to make a big difference. HH Rob

I used the 5.3" coil the other day for the first time and I loved it. It pulled a few coins out of spots where the stock coil didn't. It is very small and you have to go painfully slow, but it's a jewel of a coil for trashy spots. Pinpointing is as easy as can be. Don't tell Larry, but I think the coil has found a new side of the truck bed. MY SIDE!!! HH to all, Nancy

Another thought for you might be to plan on keeping the 10x6, and look for an even smaller coil to compliment it. I have a 4x6 Shooter, and it really shines in extreme trash, such as the areas around picnic tables, where I get constant chatter out of the bigger coils. Many users are happy with the Excellerator coil line. I have not used any of those coils, so I cannot compare them.

I have the Eclipse 5.3 and the 10x6 DD. To me they are about equal, and their primary use is not in wall to wall trash. That's why there are even smaller coils.

I've had good luck with used coils off the Classified forum. You can sometimes get one for half price of new. Just stick with a seller everybody knows, and you shouldn't have many worries.

I have the 5.3 coil and have been very happy with. As has been pointed out, it is a smaller coil and requires more time to cover a large area. It seems to work well in all of the soil conditions I have encountered here in the Southeast. I may get a 6X10 coil one day for the beach to complement my 12" Spider Coil. No hurry for that

Pete

Thanks a bunch for all of the input. I have traded it to Sherlock_jr. I have used a sub 6" coil before on my Vaquero a few years ago and never put the stock coil back on.

I don't think I am really looking for an advantage just so I am not loosing anything big by switching. Just wanting to try somehting different.

Nancy, did you ever explore that surface hunting idea that we spoke about last year with the big foot coil? I was surprised as to how well it does work and you don't anger the local grounds keepers. I may add that type of coil to my machine this or next year. I found it to be a great hunting technique even with the stock coil on my M6.

Keep your coil on the ground..... :)

saika, I wouldn't be without my Bigfoot coil in my collection. It's the best coil for surface and shallow coins in a big field, wood chips, etc. Yes, I have done it. Nice to see you on the forum again. HH to all, Nancy

I have the good fortune (or is it? decisions, decisions LOL) to have the 4X6, 5.3, 6X10, and the 9.5. They're all good in their place. That said, the 6X10 has been much better in trash for me than the 9.5 and is my most used coil. Of course the 5.3 and the 4X6 are better yet in trash, but don't cover as well. When I hit a REALLY trashy park, playground etc. I slow down and use the 4X6 as it is truly the king in heavy trash. Both it and the 5.3 outshine the 9.5 big time in trash. If one can afford it, it's a plus to have this many coils to choose from as it truly adds to the versatility and usability of the MXT. My two bits.

I like how you think ...

I just received my 5.3 and am very happy with how it works. It does loose out to the 10x6 for depth, no surprise there. I am looking to do some cherry picking umongst the trash so this should be the right coil. A change in coil can be as good as a change in detectors at times. My next decision is going to be either the 12" or the big foot coil for maximum coverage on shallow hunts for when the ground is really dry.

Keep your coil low.
