10.5" round DD 18.75KHz coil......

I was given the opportunity over this weekend to test out the 10.5" round DD 18.75KHz coil and I must say I had a blast with this coil. Once I had installed the coil it reminded me of my explorer II days which my arm and shoulder blade don't miss. After having used both the elliptical and small 6" DD coils the 10.5" round DD 18.75KHz coil felt a little cumbersome but that feeling soon diminished as I started to hit a few good targets. The area I was detecting has given me some good finds in the past and I knew it would give me some more. In the wide open spaces the 10.5" round DD 18.75KHz coil was right at home but as soon as I hit a few tight spots my thoughts were on the 6" DD coil. That soon subsided as I received a good signal on top of a tree root. The target almost eluded me as I dug from both sides trying to reach it, finally I could see it, a $2 coin for my effort, its amazing where some coins will try to hide. Pinpointing shallow targets with the 10.5" round DD 18.75KHz coil was a breeze but the deeper targets were sometimes difficult, so I switched over to prospect mode and pinpointed them that way. The 10.5" round DD 18.75KHz coil had no trouble with depth finding me two $1 coins at about 8" deep, most of the other targets were from 2" to 6" deep. I would say that the 10.5" round DD 18.75KHz coil would suit wide open spaces like beaches, parks and flat wide gold fields. If you want to cover alot of area with confidence this coil will do the job with ease although after a couple of hours it did feel a little heavy but nothing I couldn't live with. I just want to thank George for lending me the coil to try out and to wish him and everyone one on the forum a very merry christmas. Here are a few shots from today, enjoy.
Cheers!

Thanks for the report, nugget, you did a great job sniffing those coins out. I have been considering a larger 18.75 coil after the success I had with the 6" 18.75 kHz, especially on coins. I was looking at the elliptical coil and I didn't know they made a round coil in that frequency. I wonder what the difference would be as they are both DD's (if I'm not mistaken). It would seem that the elliptical coil would be a bit lighter, but maybe this is geared more for gold hunting? I have the round 10.5 @ 7 kHz and it seemed to throw the balance of the machine off a bit after using the stock coil. Eventually, I got used to the added weight and now that is my main coil. Maybe some other readers could shed some light on the difference between the the round and elliptical 18.75 coil? Thanks, Ron

Ron two things I found different are the 10.5" hi freq round coil will hold its shape deeper in the ground. The eliptical hi freq coil tapers in more from end to end as you get deeper with it while the larger round one will hold its full size across. The other thing would be the depth, I get a couple more inches out of the larger round DD coil.

Since I beach hunt mostly I removed the coil cover and that alone makes it a bit lighter. Holding the coil cover in hand seems like its real light but on the rod you can feel it. Plus I dont have to remove the coil cover now to clean it and once its scratched up enough I will just put some line a bed (rhino coating) on it and be done with it.

Thanks, Niel. Two inches more depth with the round coil would make a big difference and I'm already used to the weight. I will give one a try come Spring. Thanks for your response. Ron

I didn't get a chance over the weekend to go prospecting with the 10.5" round DD 18.75KHz coil but would love to give it a try. The only problem I would have with the coil as I have stated in the past is it wouldn't be as nimble in bushy areas and tight creeks, thats where the elliptical would kill it but on gentle slopes and flat ground where the coil would be easy to swing I would definitely consider the round 10.5" DD 18.75KHz coil. The one thing I really liked about the round 10.5" coil was the amount of ground I covered in my time out.
Cheers!
