10.5 inch 7.5khz DD Coil

Well-known member
I had my Xterra 70 up for sale last week and after several deals that didn't pan out, I decided to keep the detector. As an after thought, it is always a good idea to give any detector a chance before selling it. I had only used this detector for 6 hours or so and when I tried to sell it. I had bought a 10.5 dd 7.5 khz coil used before I had even tried the detector. I used it last Wed. and today for a total of 8 hours and this coil is the "total package". I found the separation and depth to be outstanding. I found 7 wheat pennies, two silver war nickles, one buffalo nickle, and two mercury dimes and all these coins came from 7 to 9 inches. I have no doubt there is a couple of more inches of depth available as the signals locked on and repeated from all angles. The areas I hunted were full of trash and these spots had been hunted by me many times with Explorers and Cz's. I had not found any nickles with the Xterra 70 and yesterday, I got a readout from Sandy at Minelab. The nickles all read 10 to 14 and locked on. The first coin I found today was the buffalo and it read 10 to 12 and was 8 inches deep! Even with the dd coil, the detector is not heavy or unbalanced. I feel I now have a lightweight Explorer. I can wade through trash and get great depth just by slowing down. If anyone is thinking of the 70, give this coil a shot. By the way, the two spots I hunted, the coins were at depths that I found them with an Explorer and CZ 70. It was an honest comparision and this combo rivaled the two kings of depth( Explorer and CZ 70) I am not impressed with the stock 9 inch 7.5 khz coil. It is alright, but not in the same league as the DD. I'm sure there will be some people who dispute my findings, but so be it. Give this setup a try, you won't be disappointed. R.L.

RL.....I agree with every thing you said...I have used the 10.5 DD 7.50KHz coil for a month now. The X-Terra-70 with that coil is a perfect match.
Great info! What method of pinpointing do you use?
Right off the front..khouse. I place on pinpoint and pull coil back..when the signal stops. I move it forward and stop when signaler returns. the target is right off the nose.

anyone serious about metal detecting already has one. :detecting::minelab: JMHO HH Randy

That seems to be the same for the 6x10DD on the MXT but I find that the deeper the target
the further back from the nose the target is. My imagination?

Tinfoil,
On your black sand beach does you HF coil not perform as expected? I'm torn on which 10.5 DD coil to buy.

Maybe some one can give a opinion on how to hunt this beach and get the kind of depth I need. I realise the X70 is only a single freq machine depending on the coil you are running. I just can't seem to get deep stuff and the small Iron and the black sand in Dis. it just is unreliable. Too much falsing . I have ran it every way possible. Tracking did help though in dis. . I will try again. Running Prospect and no Id is not prodctive. Maybe I can run it and try the audio on the iron and different good targets. Maybe the audio will sound a little different that way I can tell the bad targets from the iron. Anywhere else in the dirt it is a excellent detector as long as I take the batteries out after I hunt. With the cover on and when you leave the batteries in it has a tendence to shut off on me. I don't care about that. No big deal. In the dirt it is excellent. I just got it back from M/L. They said that they resoldered the battery wires, replaced front panel and replaced the case. It runs great and detects 10"s to 12"s and gives good Id in the dirt. Now if I just could get it to hunt that good on that bad beach I hunt I will be happy. I will spend more time with it next time I go back over there. Thanks for asking. HH Jerry aka Tinfoil

This may sound a bit offbeat Jerry; but last year when I got away to hunt on the Gold coast, I hunted in black sand conditions with good success with my Ace. The secret, was that I notched out the bottom 3 notches and reduced the sensitivity down to 5 bars (out of :geek:. the detector ran fairly smoothly with good recoveries on a trashy site.(A market is held regularly there.) Given that the 70 is a notch detector with better equipped circuitry, I can't see why it would work for you.
I'm not sure that depth will be improved. The only real other solution, would be a PI machine or perhaps a multi frequency Minelab one.

Hi Jerry,

If I remember you kinda favor them big chunky rings. Ever try the 3 Khz coil? I wonder if it would act kinda like the HH Wader? heck you should just get both the 7.5 DD and the 3 Khz and have em ready when the next time you go visiting over there. ;)

I don't post to your posts often but you give some good advice based on real experience and experimenting!

Heck Jerry nobody hardly ever replies to my posts either. :That is unless I really try to start sumthin.

Snows melting and the ice will be out soon! Yeehaw!!

Count me in on the 10.5" 7.5 khz DD club. Mine should be here on Friday. The way everybody is raving about them, I can't wait to get out and give it a try.

Good hunting, John K
