10.5" HFDD or 5x10" HFDD

I am thinking about buying one of the above mentioned 18.75KHz coils.
I am aware that the 5x10" one isn't water proof. Beside that and beside the shape, is there a big difference about these coils, or could you use both for the same thing? Or call it: Why is Minelab selling two 10" 18.75KHz coils, there has to be a reason. Have a nice day, Peter

5x10"

Sales market=Prospectors

1. Very light weight.
2. Small....will fit in between rocks, bushes, trees etc.
3. Very sensitive to small gold.

10.5"

Sales market=Beach hunters, Field Hunters, Relic hunters.

1. Will go deeper than the 5x10" on medium size targets and larger; rings, coins etc.
2. Coil area covers larger volume of soil, better coverage on shallower targets.

But either coil can be used for probably 75% of what the other coil may be used for.

Example: Freshwater beach hunting.

If my interest is small gold jewelry like earrings or chains, then I would use the 5x10". But if later in the day I wished to go after very deep gold rings, I would switch to the 10.5" and cover the same area again.

Barnacle Bill gave you a very good answer! I would suggest you get the 10.5" DD coil and it is a good idea to get a coil cover. The 10.5"DD does very well on the fields and finds the smallest things, I dug several pea sized objects today with mine and always do. Considering the size of the coil, it will lock on to a good target even if a bad target is in the same hole. It also gets very good depth. I had a good hunt this evening with my XT70 using the 10.5"DD on a farm field, found an 1808 Silver Bavarian Maximilian coin and a hand full of other coins and relics. HH, Mike

Nice to talk to you, again.

You are right Barnacle Bills answer showed me the differences of both coils and I now know that I go for the 10.5"DD 18KHz. I will do so before the summer holidays, as I plan to visit the German North- and East sea beaches with my family.

I had myself a short hunt this morning, but found only some clad, best find was a nearly 50 years old nice looking German 1 Mark. I plan to get up early tomorrow morning and try it again... You wouldn't believe how many rusty nails you can find on a beach volleyball field...

Hope to talk to you, soon. Have a nice day, Peter

I have both the 10.5 round and the 10x5 and in the goldfields the eliptical is far better than the round. The round is noisier and needs to be run on a much lower sens than the eliptical.
No there is nothing wrong with the round one its just that open webs do tend to be a bit more prone to noise than solids. Less shielding. The round also picks up a little more em than the eliptical.
In one spot to shut the round up it had to be run on a sens of 20, the eliptical could be run flat out, 30. Open webs also can be a pain when there is a lot of scrub where they constantly keep getting caught up. My choice any-day is the eliptical but that may just be me.

I think the elliptical isn't water proof, so I couldn't use it at the beaches etc..
That's my knock out criteria for the 10x5". Thanks Peter.
