10.5 DD vs 10X5

I have read that the 10.5 is pretty deep but that the 10X5 is not necessarily. I was wondering if someone could comment as to how these coils work differently and why.
Thanks

The frequency is different. I have also heard that the depth of a coil can roughly be related to the width of the coil. A coil is basically an antenna.

The 10.5" HF DD is available is 18.75kHz, same as the Elliptical 10x5" HF DD.

The main difference is weight and depth. The 10.5" coil can punch a little deeper than the Elliptical but not by much. However, the 10.5" is a heavier coil and a number of owners find it makes their X-Terra 70 "nose heavy" in just a short time. Tired arms are another complaint. The Elliptical 10x5" is water resistant (you can splash water and light rain on it) but the 10.5" is apparently waterproof.

The 10.5" coil is popular for Relic Hunters whereas the 10x5" Elliptical coil was designed for use by Prospectors. Both are used by Coin hunters on beaches as they both handle the conductivity of saline water rather well.

The reason the Elliptical Coil is popular is a combination of weight and shape. The narrow Elliptical coil shape means it can be squeezed between smaller spaces and it can be used all day without nearly the amount of strain on the arms as the 10.5" coil tends to generate. Coil emission blade is similar on both. The depth is slightly deeper on the 10.5" coil although the difference is believed to be between 5% to 15%, depending on the person using it.

Thanks for the help. I guess I didn't realize that the 10X5 only came in 18.75 kHz.
I was considering a DD for regular coin shooting thinking that a blade would stand a better chance of not being effected by trash near a target rather than a cone. Originally, thinking the 10.5 & the 10X5 was the same frequency, I didn't understand why a person wouldn't take the elliptical coil due to the weight.
Thanks again.

I really love my 10x5 Coil. Granted I haven't used the 10.5 coil to compare. However, the 10x5 is super light (which is a major bonus) and works great at pinpointing and isolating multiple targets. I really like it's shape, it works nice around obstacles.
Regarding the waterproof problem with the 10x5, I read some wheres in this forum that you can waterproof it using some Silicon sealant. I haven't done so yet, as so far I haven't ventured into water detecting.... yet.

For heavy trash, the 6 inch DD 18.75KHz is amazing. None of my small concentrics of any brand can see between items better. Don't be afraid of the 5x10 for coin hunting, I've recovered pennies at 9inches measured in compacted gravel.

I tried the 5 x 10 today for the first time for about 15 minutes at the local park. I was impressed with at how well it did with clad dimes. I went over a area that I had just gone over with the stock coil and find 2 dime that I had missed previously. So you are right Bill, don't count this coil out for coin hunting. I'm gonna give it a go again tomorrow should have a few hours more time in the morning.

Yeah Bill , I'm in agreement with you on that 6" 18.75 DD coil , it beats the heck out of any other small coil I've ever used of any other brand in concentric or DD . Since I've put it on my XT-50 , it hardly ever comes off . I just purchased a 5x10 elliptical , as I'm an older guy and I can't swing those heavier coils for as long as I used to .I'm glad to hear that the 5x10 gets decent depth . I should be getting it in a few days and I'm really looking forward to seeing what it can do
.I'll be looking forward to seeing your next report on it also Mach 2 !! Sounds like your a bit impressed with it already !!

This statement coming from you BB is quite significant. I just bought my 70 and 6" coil not too long ago and what little time I have in on it, I came to the same conclusion.
Another 30 days or so before the weather, overgrowth and heat comes down here but I am chomping at the bits to get out in the iron trash and see what I can find.
