10 1/2" Coil vs 8" Coil - Tesoro Sand Shark

I got a 10 1/2" coil about a week ago and have used it on the beach for about six hours. It does hit deeper than the 8" (DUH)

I now have a 10 1/2" Tesoro coil for sale if anybody is interested.

IMO the downsides to using the 10 1/2" coil out weigh the extra depth. First of all it weighs more so you can't swing it as fast and I get tired swinging it much more quickly. It is harder to pinpoint with and it is much more difficult for me to distinguish a good target from a bad target. You get a lot more "rrrRRRrrr" signals with it than "Beeep" signals. When you get an "rrrRRRrrr" signal you better be ready to dig right down right next to the hinges of hell. I've always used a little hand held scoop and am comfortable using them. Maybe somebody that is using one of those "backhoe" type scoops might like the extra depth that the big coil gives.

My two cents

Hi Harvdog42,
I've got the box on my SandShark mounted on the upper part of the handle, behind the handle, just below the arm band. It offsets the coil weight mounted there. With the box there and the 10.5 coil I have found the Sand Shark to be the easiest detector to swing I have with the possible exception of the Compadre. Maybe I don't swing it so fast.

PM sent.
