$1.00 gold coin

I recently bought a 1850 $1.00 gold coin from ebay, and I noticed on the xterra VDI chart it has gold coins but does NOT list the $1 gold coin. So I tested it to give you the info, it comes in at 8-10. I tried it several times, and it gives 8-10 everytime. Dang those $1 gold coins are tiny! 13mm 0.0484 oz or 1.672grams
just to put that into perspective it is smaller than a dime, which is 18mm

Thanks. I'll have to write that down. I didn't realize they were that small either!

Thanks for the TID information Terry. I hadn't included it on the list because I don't have one of them. I'll revise the list to include your reading. The diameter of your 1850 $1.00 US gold coin is 13mm. But in 1854, the Govt. started making them larger and thinner. Same weight, just a bit bigger at 15mm. The only other US coins comparible in size, that I'm aware of, are the silver 3-cent piece at 14mm. and the silver half-dime at 15.5 mm. And you are correct, they are tiny!
Thanks again fo the TID info. HH Randy

Good to know! VDI's that low are usually trash foil and I don't always dig them. I bought a $1.00 gold coin that had been made into a pendant with the pendant hanger removed, you can still see where it was. Paid around $45.00 for it and probably got ripped off, LOL. HH, Mike

ripped off? I highly doubt it, the gold melt value is like $56 for these right now. I saw many ones that were removed from jewelry, holed, soldered etc....go for $100 on ebay

Saw the title and hoped you had dug it. Then as I opened the page, I came to recall the piles of snow you folks have. Glad you were able to buy it.

Just out of curiosity where did you order this from? I would like to have one, Beale.
I won it on an ebay auction, go to coins, click on gold, then they break it down into $1.00 ...$2.50....$5.....etc
