03/06 Yard hunting

Today my buddy and I hunted 4 more yards in a nearby town. We didn't find any real old silver but still managed a few keepers that we are still happy with. His take for the day was a 42' Walker, 43' merc, and a big token. I managed 2 washington quarters from 2 different yards, a defective 1916 Merc that is missing a "D", an 1889 injun, a token, and an old makeup compact that I thought was a pocketwatch and a bunch of wheats. Pics below: A group pic on the bumper of the truck, compact, and my finds cleaned up. Thanks for looking! JJ

Thanks Mike. I just recieved by email my buddies finds cleaned up. I'm not big on posting other people's finds but he doesn't post on findmall (or much of anywhere). He's a much better photographer than I am. JJ

Yes, He does a good job on photos and digs.
My hunting buddy leaves me to post the pics when he goes with me as well. I do not mind in the least Ii like taking photos of the finds etc.

Once again good job on the finds.

What a great hunt !! It just needed a Buffalo or Liberty nickel to round it off ........very nice finds !!

Thanks for the replies. McDave, I only dug one surface nickel today and a few pull tabs. The lower nickel tones were quite sparse today, now that you mention it. The 6x8 sef has quickly become my new workhorse while yard hunting. JJ

Thanks for the replies guys. I noticed I am getting extreme depth in the area between the sidewalk and street at a few different properties. The soil has a very soft, sandy, almost loamy texture that feels like you're walking on jello and cuts like birthday cake. Between the sidewalk and house is more like a dirt/clay mix. JJ

Excellent finds - a real nice load of silver and wheats. What's on the other side of the two tokens? I can try to look them up for you in the new Iowa token book. HH

Thanks TokenDigger. I do have Gary Henderson's latest catalog of Iowa trade tokens, in fact I was fortunate enough to be listed in the credits. The large token is Council Bluffs 320 (2B) and the small token that I found is Magnolia 100 (4D). No unlisted tokens this time but still keepers. JJ

Years ago found a 1916 merc with mint luster on it and must have been dropped new..Mixed it in with some silver coins to show a dealer and wow his eyes lit up when he saw it but alas no D and better luck next time...
