    Hang on to your pinpointer

Having lost several pinpointers and back tracked more than I care to, I duct taped or screwed (depending on the pinpointer construction) the coiled plastic cords used for key rings on my pinpointers. Now with a quick clip on my belt loop or other handy spot, my pinpointers are always attached. BB

    A little test

I posted this on the Tesoro company forum in response to a post that wondered about the air test on a $20 gold piece with the Vaquero. This made me curious. I don't have a Vaq, nor do I have a 20 dollar gold piece, BUT I do have a DeLeon and I DO have a 10 dollar gold piece. So I tested that...

One thing that I wonder about

It seems that many or most coil recommendations mention that larger coils are not as sensitive to smaller targets, but give more depth on larger targets. Conversely, small coils should have increased sensitivity to the smaller targets, but at the sacrifice of depth. If this is the case, why do...

An observation favoring the all metal setting

Here's some food for thought, especially if you can handle running in all metal without going bonkers from the trash. Have done a bit of testing (in air) with several machines. Was primarily interested in target masking and discrimination. What I found has made me rethink my own hunting...

Another "if in doubt, dig" tip

Occasionally we get a response that bounces around on the display as different coins with a junk indication or two as well. DIG - often you'll end up uncovering a coin spill with coins of mixed denominations in the same hole or close together. HH BB

    Vibra Probe 580

Would like to hear what anyone using the Vibra Probe 580 thinks of it. What's typical depth on coins etc.? Thanks, BB

    Dig those shallow hits

It's been mentioned from time to time that pulltabs generally don't settle as deeply as coins and therefore one can ignore IDs reading tab/foil that are shallow. That's true most of the time. However, nearly every ring, small piece of jewelry etc. that I've found in parks/lawns was hung in the...

    A little expeimenting

Hi all. I'm always trying something and often find I'm still learning. In this case I put a very small gold earring and a small gold chain down to test. I was using my Silver Sabre umax that I had modified by replacing the all metal pinpoint button with a toggle switch so that I can run in all...

    Melted aluminum

Well, finally got out for the first time yesterday. Dropped down in the valley along the Snake River and hit some camp and picnic spots. Didn't find much to holler about - a bit of clad, a couple of fishing sinkers, and plenty of trash. My MXT really sounds off and gives a solid penny/dime...

    Would like an explanation?

We've all read on the forums and sometimes elsewhere that air testing a detector is not a good measure of its actual performance as some machines test poorly in the air, but do much better on buried targets. I'd like to see a logical or tested explanation of how that works. Many targets do not...

Think your sensitivity is at 9? Think Again.

Cold and snow is keeping me out of the field so I got to comparing and air testing to day. I recently acquired a Conquistador umax and air testing inside, it didn't seem to compare to my Silver Sabre umax, nor my De Leon so I got to fussing a bit. Turns out, when comparing the three different...

    Newbie on this forum

Greetings and Happy New Year all. While I have participated heavily on several of the detector forums, this is my first venture on this one. I have a question that probably many of you can answer saving me (I'm lazy when I can tap others expertise) a fair bit of research. I know over the past...

    11" Concetric coil

If anyone may be interested, I've listed an 11" Tesoro concentric coil for the umax series on Ebay. Item #110306376507. Currently they only offer this in the widescan design, so if anyone prefers the concentric, here one is. HH BB

    Quick MXT Question

When do most of you change out your old batteries. I know the manual suggest doing it when the display shows 8volts, but I'm wondering if anyone's field experience would suggest earlier? Thanks, BB

    W/TT 11" coil

I want to trade a very clean Tesoro umax 11" concentric coil with scuff for a clean 5.75" umax coil with scuff. Current listings show only an 11" widescan, but this coil is marked "Concentric". BB email - blauct@moscow.com
