I don't know if the War Bird was ever in a movie or not. I just liked it and had a chance to buy it for the right price from an estate sale. I've had that Puma for over 45 years. Bought it brand new in '77 for $60. I've had the two Gerbers and the Japanese Browning in that pic for about as long...

Yes, that is a limited edition Gil Hibben "War Bird". There's also a Gerber Mk1, a Puma boot knife, a Browning (Hiitori) drop point, a Case XXX boot knife, and an A.G. Russell "Sting".

Not hardly! Here are some of mine.....but not all.

Grind out all the rust, then pre-heat that thing to about 300° and get some 4140 tool steel welding rod. That would clean up nicely.

That one has had a hard life! Mine aren't that beat up. I need good edges to do what I do. All the shoes I nail on have hammer drawn clips. Hammers are pretty important, too. My favorite rounding hammer is an old Mustad-Jim Poor, and I use a Roy Bloom ball-pein for clipping. I have a Bloom...

The main reason I like the Pro Forge is its design. The heat rolls inside, so it stays more uniform. And it's advertised to hit 2600°F, so I can forge weld in it, which is important to me because I handmake all my own bar shoes.

I may get back into knife making someday soon. I've made many over the years, but life got in the way while I was married and paying for everything. I've made my living working out of a Pro Forge PF-200 every day for the last 25 years. Before the Pro Forge I used an NC Whisper Momma. I have...

    Xterra Pro/Nox 900 headphones

Nothing to worry about. They should work just fine with either detector, and they won't favor one over the other. Both the machine (whichever you choose) and the phones need to be in PAIR mode at the same time to initialize their interface. After that they are locked in until they are turned off...

    Never had one

Ground Balance always makes a difference, which is one of the reasons air tests are about useless for anything beyond hearing what the tones sound like. The machine needs something to ground balance to. Aside from that, Tracking shouldn't have a thing to do with it.

Seeing that you're in the UK, and probably interested in searching for ancient artifacts so you'll dig everything, I would recommend that at some point you experiment with Prospector Mode w/Iron Mask. It will take some getting used to since it's a no-motion VCO w/o TID, but it will see deeper...

Congratulations! You now own the best kept secret in metal detecting. Best advice I can offer is, run GB Tracking ON, and sweep speed should be around 1ft/second. The machine should run very stable, not chatty. Good luck! If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask.

Do I need permission from anyone....

Typically, that is on the "right-of-way", so it's technically/legally fair game most places. The homeowners do tend to get pretty possessive, since they do maintain them, so asking them isn't a bad practice. On the normal 2-lane road the right-of-way extends 33 feet from the road center.

Yep! The Explorer SE, too. You don't even have an option. There's no user accessible GB function on any of them.

Stories about Tracking costing you targets are pure BS. If they were true, you'd have heard more crying instead of raving from E-trac and CTX users. Something that I do often is Noise Cancel. Changing location, frequencies, and/or sensitivity can easily cause a need to re-scan for the best NC...

The threshold is particularly important when you're hunting with any DISC at all. Listening for the null is a valuable tool in more dense trash where masking is an issue. Even though I run All Metal, I like having the threshold hum in the background because I want to hear everything that's going...

Part of the reason that Ground Balance is so important when considering TID is that GB changes depending on the frequency selected. That WILL have an impact on target response and TID accuracy.

    Xterra Pro 4 Big Silvers=Iron

Properly ground balanced, the TID is more likely to be consistent with a low frequency and tend to be more jumpy with a high frequency due to target bin width assignments. Ground balance can't be overlooked, which is part of the reason I don't put much stock in air tests.

You've got that backwards. High conductors and low frequencies shake hands better than high frequencies. Decades ago, George Payne determined that the optimum frequency for silver dimes was 2.7kHz. If you're looking for a gold hoard, then high frequency is what you want. It won't penetrate the...

Buried in a sack they will likely be spread out some. I only tested them in a neat stack, so I'll be interested in your findings.

    Xterra Pro 4 Big Silvers=Iron

I haven't seen the video, but after reading your post I decided to conduct my own test to see what it was all about. I grabbed a stack of 10 silver dollars to test with. I tested in 5 & 15kHz. Mind you, this was also all air testing, which I don't put a lot of stock in. And IMO, fresh planted...
