    School finds

Hi all, a couple of days ago spent a whole day at an inn site which was inhabited from the 1860's right through to the 1920's. Plenty of broken bottles but not one coin. You'd think that in 60 years a few would have been dropped somewhere. The upside was the property owner told me of an...

    Finds from the Vegie Patch:ausflag::detecting:

Got out yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours to a site I've just been given permission to hunt. It's an old Chinese market garden. During the late 1800's and in some places well up into the 1900's many Australian towns had a Chinese market garden that supplied fresh fruit and vegetables...

    Help ID rifle:ausflag:

Eyeballed the barrel sticking out of the ground at a house site a couple of years ago. It's not a lever action and I think it's a Colt Lightening. Could someone verify for me. Thanks..Ken.

    Construction site

Had a couple of afternoons at the construction site I mentioned I had permission to hunt in an earlier post. Trouble was by the time I was allowed in the majority of top soil had been carted away and the surface was back to the clay. About a quarter of the area showed signs of ash and broken...

    2007 1st Hunt

Got up early this morning and went over the the toll house site for a couple of hours before I had to help the boss with a few house chores. The site is in the showground and next to a dog racing track. A couple were there exercising their dogs when they started very excitedly yelling at me...

    OK. I lied

I know I said I'd had my last hunt for the year but things were pretty quite around here this afternoon and I thought I could hear Queen Victoria calling me, so I went out to the toll gate site for a couple of hours. Ended up with a 1951 sixpence, three pennies, 1882, 1885, 1891 and an 1895...

    Last hunt for 2006

My brother in law wanted to see how a detector works so we went back to the toll gate site this afternoon for a couple of hours. I detected and he dug. Best finds were a 1918 threepence and a very corroded 1826 English halfpenny. Thanks for looking and a Merry Christmas to all....Ken.

    This mornings hunt

Hi all. Couple of days ago saw a photo from the 1870's that depicted a scene looking across what is now the showground. In those days nothing but bare paddocks but what interested me was that is showed a small house which no longer exists next to the river. Got permission from the local...

    Todays finds

My neighbour told me about a spot on the river about 10 minutes from my home where people used to picnic and swim so I went down for a couple of hours this morning. The top section has been pushed around to make a track down to the water but the bottom portion looks pretty original. My finds...

    Another day, another racecourse

My mate Geoff and I travelled to a country racecourse yesterday for a hunt. We both met about halfway which meant a 200 klm round trip for the both of us. Things didn't turn out as good as we hoped for, after a couple of hours it was apparent the place had been hit hard at some previous time...

    Penny day

:jump::ausflag:Spent a couple of hours at one of my local primary schools the other afternoon. No silver, a couple of dollars in small change and some pennies and halfpennies, the oldest an English 1877. I wasn't disappointed. I love finding pre decimal coins no matter what they are and it's...

    Back to the races.....again

My mate Geoff and I revisited the racecourse again today. You wouldn't believe it, the only day we could get away and it rained. It hasn't rained around here for months. We did get most of the day in before it started. Geoff ended up with $42 in one and two dollar coins and a few pennies and...

    Slow day

Hi all. Spent the afternoon at an old site from the 1880's - 1900. A spur line was run off the main railway line to a nearby lake for the purpose of removing sand and rock for ballast to continue the line further south. From about 1890 to 1900 a train carried picnic parties out to the site on...

    Yesterdays finds

My mate, Geoff and I went to a showground in another town for the day yesterday. The ground was like concrete and we had to leave a few targets till another day. Geoff got a few pennies and halfpennies, the oldest being 1888, two sixpences and a few dollars. My best were a florin 1952, two...
