Found these buttons next to each other about 20 feet away from the five Sharps bullets pictured (which were found within a 10 foot radius). Backs have typical shanks and the large one reads "Superior Quality". Any ideas? Thanks. Pa Diggins

Debate - - Real or not real???

Hear Ye - Hear Ye! This debate is over two objects. These items were found in an area known for defense lines in 1863 and also battle re-enactments. The first is an Irish Brigade Hat Insignia, aka an Irish Harp, found as is, patina and all. On the back are soder marks. Secondly, a...

Gold Plated Thingy - What it is, I don't know...

Hello, I found this in a civil war campsite area, (where many bullets & buttons were found). Confused, not sure what it is. It is gold plated - for sure. The metal is pitted like it would be if in the ground for a long time. Any ideas? Thank you in advance. [attachment 23184...

    relic hunting in VA

Hello all. Just wondering if anyone had suggestions for areas in VA to relic hunt. I know that's a broad statement - I guess I'm just asking for general areas where civil war battles/skirmishes occured where there is not significant development and where the sites are not national parks. This...

    Ma's first identifiable coin

...a capped bust half-dime. We're mostly CW relic hunters but we'll take an old silver coin any day. Ma seems to find all the cool stuff - I think she's been messin' with my machine :punch: [attachment 20705 hlfdme1.jpg]

    A very cool first!

Hello all. Ma and I went out with MDHoledigger and had a pretty good day - heck, it was a killer day for Ma! She found her first ever eagle breastplate! The cool thing is that we have only been into the hobby since Autumn of last year (thanks to Metalmike) :yo: Needless to day she's very happy...

    The real thing or not?

Ma and I had some exciting finds today but here's the problem: We know that the confederate defenses of Williamsport during the retreat from Gettysburg were precisely in the location we were hunting (I have a map that was generated from Meade's official report showing Lee's defensive line on...

Finds, Including a period repair on a button......

Here's a few things from yesterday and today. The general service button, (shield), was repaired. Wonder what was used to solder this button - It is done well, very strong after 140+ years. Can't wait to get out again!!

Hi All, Found this the other day with my digging buddy, mdholedigger. The site, we believe, was a encampment. We have found many things there. This decorative metal piece is definately old, the metal is pitted and the gold color is GOLD for sure. Wish I could get better photos. It is 1 1/2"...

    Relic hunting in West Virginia

Hello all. Pa Diggins here. I just spoke to someone at the Berkeley County Historical Society to get info on a Civil War battle site in my area. He just told me that in WV, it is illegal for a private citizen to use a metal detector on private land even with permission from the landowner. He...
