Well got back yesterday. 9 hrs door to door. Thankfully the hurricane that started in florida and moved up almost to the ohio valley really didn't have much effect on our weather except cloud cover. Conditions were a thousand times better than last yrs trip.

Anyway here the run-down... Detected 5 1/2 days for a total of around 23 hrs of swinging. Low tide areas were very soft sand indeed so any gold had sunk down deeep. The nox 600 ran great.
Beach 1 sens at near max ( 23) and ran all metal a lot of the time. Totals: 7 quarters, 2 dimes 4 pennys, 1 junk ring, 1 silver ring 1 gold earing stud with real diamond ?? dont have a tester so who knows. And 5-6 fishing weights.. That's it !!

30 yrs ago, Used to come back with 20-30 bucks in change. It was like that for about 10 yrs, than it got less and less and less. Now I really go for alittle exercise and enjoy the beach sites. Can't say I'll make anymore trips down, but I wish the change days would sure come back. Take care folks... Mark ( ohio )
 
Like you said, if it’s not there, it’s not there.
I have noticed a decrease in coins even inland the last few years Mark.
In the 18 years since I started it is nothing like it was back even then.
That soft sand is not a good sign as you already know.
All the heavy items are too deep to detect.
The conditions at a beach as far as metal detecting goes can change overnight…. Storms can help or hurt things.
At least you can say you have it your best.
And you got a coupe goodies!!!👍
 
I am afraid I have to say the days of 100+ coins and 5 or 6 gold rings are long gone. UNLESS... Mother Nature helps and moves a mammoth pile of sand. She did that just a week or so ago. Two of us hit a low spot and pulled 14 rings (no junk SS, TC Ti rings) and a few silver coins. One day only then not a signal was to be heard. My last 5 gold ring day was on y first hunt with the newly released Garrett ATX. But the enjoyment thrill of the hobby is still there and if it was not a heavy rain, I'd be out detecting in the salt water right now.

At least you didn't get skunked.
My luck I'd of come home with a bucket of foil.
And a few zincs.
You enjoyed it. That's all that matters.
On a side note. I'll add.
Anyone into gold prospecting.
These hurricanes have moved record amounts of dirt.
The gold belt may be alive again.

A ball field concession stand that was a very productive area to detect in the past had the grass paved over last year and this year has a sign saying credit or debit only. I'm still writing my representatives to replace the dollar bill with a coin ... still have that hope of finding treasures.

Wish they'd go back to a silver dollar coin.
 
I go hard on the beaches after the storms last winter in January there was feet of sand removed in RI finds were incredible!

During an out of town power restoration job.
Nujersey.
We arrived near end of the storm.
Had an hour on the beach during a break.
Yes I skipped lunch for the chance.
Get to the beach and there's a six ft plus cutt.
Being a great lakes guy.
Never seen anything like it.
Waves were still hitting the cut about 2' deep.
Then washing back at least a hundred ft.
It seemed anyway.
Impossible to get down into that without risking this old farts life.
All I could do was to just sit and watch as the back wash thinned to inch's deep before the next wave.
Only to see hundreds of coins flipping back out only to be thrown back up again.
Wish I could of gone back the next day.
Got to busy puttin lines up.
Must of been some really nice rows of coins and jewelry.
That was four or five years ago.
Don't have a clue what city we were in.
We'd get a job sent to our mapping tablet and just followed the line on the map.
Got lost a few times losing the signal.
And I mean Lost. 🤯

Mark, I’m sad you didn’t do well but glad I’m not the only one that gets skunked on the OBX, regularly,lol. I go down for at least a week each December to Corolla, drive 9 or so miles from the public access to the horse fence. The last gold ring I found up there was over 10 years ago. One great day with a small Spanish cob and worn out King George copper. The last gold ring was in Nags head near the pier, 7 years ago. That area used to be good but so much erosion and new fill sand has killed it. Not sure why the Corolla area changed so much. A friend that lived there, passed away a few years back, maybe pre Covid? He had found some nice gold and had a case of Spanish coins, one beautiful gold one. I hope to go this year, but mostly fresh air and exercise, lol

J... this was probably our 25th trip down to obx. My luck has been good in the past in the duck areas and between mp7-11. Hunting has been quite honestly horrible the last 3-5 trips down there. Locals told me this trip that there was a beach replenishment project last yr or the yr before that.. Maybe thats part of the problem, or people just aren't bringing what they used too down to the water. Now, pretty much I'm there just to relax and enjoy the view.
