but it's hard to find what "The Oakland" was without a patent number. There is no information available on the U.S. Patent Office site for Sept. 1, 1901, but there were 417 patents issued on September 24th. Unfortunately, for a date that old you can only search the patents by issue date and patent number. Most patents are filed by individuals who are either employed by the company they are inventing the product for or, most likely, later selling the rights to a company to produce it. So it's not surprising if "The Oakland" can't be found by searching patents by J.A. Gray, unless J.A. Gray himself was issued the patent.
